Next Door's Line - & - Mine!
« on: August 07, 2010, 02:34:13 PM »

Hi   :)

My next door neighbours are playing around with their telephone line again - & - It's definitely having an effect on my line  >:(

They have Cut the Outside Line - & - Are pulling it tighter through their house.
They have also completely changed another line going into their house. ( Could be for sky  :-\ )

My Speed...

And if you look at the pictures below...
You will see that my noise margin has suddenly shot - Up!  :o
Has DLM changed me to a profile of... 9db
OR... Extra noise margin!
Don't Know
Note: My Sync has not changed!

Thanks!

Just to clarify........do you mean that they have actually severed a line owned by BT ( never mind who telephony charges are paid to) that runs from a telephone pole to their house?

If so, it could be classed as criminal damage, so the police and BT  will be interested in the situation, and you should report the incident to both of these authorities.

Zoe, your stats haven't got worse, they've improved. You haven't lost sync - all that's happened is that in the second set of stats the amount of noise on the line is less, so the noise margin has increased. This is good. I don't expect that this is anything to do with your neighbours' nefarious activities, it's probably just a normal variation in noise levels.

Looking at the stats ,your synch rate is exactly the same , I think its actually good news the line is a little quieter so your SNR margin is up . Don't forget SNR margin is constantly changing depending on the line noise . That is why itis better to monitor it properly over longer periods to see how the line is behaving say over 24 hrs .

Hi    :)

@ tuftedduck

Few months ago they claimed that their dog had suddenly decided to chew their telephone line outside their house.
When my mum told them they would be likely to have to pay for the damaged line... They put a load of tape on the line - & - Left it alone!
Then a couple of weeks ago we had heavy rain - & - They said they had no telephone. ( They never mentioned Broadband - & - Their router was Never switched off. )
Think they have their phone line with AOL ( Like Me! )
And when they realised that they could NOT just phone up BT and ask for a new phone line for FREE...
Miraculously! .. Half an hour later their phone was working again  ::)

Until Today!
They told my mum that they had no phone or internet.
NOTE: They've got a friend of theirs to do the Work
They've pulled their phone line down to make it longer - Cut it at where they say the dog cut it - Threaded it back through the wall - Rejoined It!
Quote
They have also completely changed another line going into their house. ( Could be for sky )
I've just found out that this other line was a Telephone extension line that they have fitted themselves some years back - & - Are replacing it with a new one.

Note!
I haven't spoken to my neighbours ( My Cousin ) for the last 8 months
Not since they got a bee in their bonnet about my Wireless Channel.
They have spent the last 8 months trying to force me off my wireless channel ( Think they Think! .. If they get me off it they will have a channel all to themselves )
Even Today! ( While they're supposed to not have Internet )
They have changed their SSID from the the SSID that they have been using for a couple of months... Back to just: Netgear
As though they think that will fool me into not knowing it's their router.
Think they're a bit confused about how N works - & - Think they are blaming me for them not getting it to do what they thought it would do.
To Be Honest... Think They've Gone A Bit Crazy   :-\
My mum still speaks to them.
1) Because we are related
2) My mum doesn't understand about BB and Wi-Fi and Stuff!

@ Eric & Jeff

That's reassuring to know

Bit of a Coincidence... Don't You Think?
I'm not going to reboot my router just yet though.
Just in case my noise margin suddenly drops back down again... When next door have finished with their Telephone rewiring.
I'll have a check in a min!
See what my noise margin is up to  ;)

Thanks!

Zoe

Do they use your internet connection and have access to your router?

If not I hope you have it secured with a strong password or they may be using it anyway.

Why reboot ?

If you did reboot and the line was quiet ,as indicated by your current SNR margin ,then you could expect you SNR margin to drop (to the target) giving you a slightly higher synch rate .

But is it worth it . If your line is stable just leave it . Before rebooting try to monitor using routerstats . This will show how your line is behaving . Spot checks are only good for that particular point in time. Changes in SNR margin are not really meaningful without seen the pattern of these changes .

Yep! - My Router Is Secure  ;)

Oh! - Don't Worry!
Think they have had a couple of attempts at getting into my router.
Unknown Device : Trying to connect with my laptop was the give away  ::)
I did re-do all my security... Just to be on the safe side!
Using... WPA2

That's What I Meant!
I'd rather leave things be for now - & - See how things go.
But! - I do know that with that much extra noise margin... Could probably sync comfy and stable at approx 12800 Kbps  8)

Speeds still all over the place today...

Hi  :)

Just To Clarify...

It's the telephone line that runs up the Outside of their house.
That my neighbour has... Pulled - Cut - Rejoined!

Our houses are Terraced.
Us - & - Them... Joined Together!

Believe that our telephone lines meet up and live next to each other at the top of the telephone pole.
Don't think they have any connection before then  :-\

Thanks!

Hi
quote : Speeds still all over the place today..

I would NOT expect your neighbours to affect your Throughput . The throughput seems low for your synch Rate . Are you using Wireless ?

The difference between your synch rate and your throughput is such ,that  trying to marginally improve your synch rate is unlikely to show any significant benefits . I would concentrate on improving the throughput .

Hi Jeff  :)

Yep! -  Am Using Wireless!

We've been wireless from day one as it's the only way for us to have broadband around our house.
1 x Child | 1 x Dog | 1 x Wheelchair | 1 x Mother .. That could fall over her own Feet.
Don't do well with Wires
1 x Desktop
1 x Sons iPod touch
1 x Sons XBox
1 x Sons PS3
------------------ G : 2.4 GHz
1 x Laptop
1 x Sony TV
------------------ N : 5 GHz

But from past experience and speed results of old...
I know that it's not my wireless that's affecting my Throughput

When I was on Upto 8mbps ... Speed Test Average = 6.50mbps
I did a speed test about a week before we were switched to Upto 24mbps - & - Download = 7.29mbps
But as a rule of thumb...
I've always thought  :-\
Throughput = 2 Less Than... Sync Seed

Since being on UpTo 24mbps ... The gap between Sync and Throughput seems to have Widened. ( More like 3 or 4 )  :'(
Even when I was Synced at 13000kbps
Still never even got to a Throughput of 10mbps
Upto 24mbps
Best So Far...
Down = 9.85 | Up = 0.85 | Ping = 35

Just Now...

Thanks!

Zoe

PS.
Noise margin tells me that my neighbours are definitely back online again.

Hi  :)

My neighbours now appear to be having a go at using 2 router at the same time  ::)

They Must Think I'm Thick!

It's Them That's Thick!
If they think the only way to identify a router is through it's SSID

There is a system that uses that to get higher speeds.

I was reading about that the other day.

I think you had to have two lines and two ISP connections.

Hi BritBrat  :)

Nope!
They haven't got 2 telephone lines.
I'm pretty certain of that!

Anyway!
They finally gave up last night - & - Turned their old G router Off!
This morning they have for the 3rd time in 3 days... Once again renamed their N router back to the SSID they usually use.

To Be Honest!
Yesterday when they had 2 routers showing...
I don't think either of them were actually connected to the Internet  :-\
Coz...
When they are OFF Line .. My Noise Margin = 8db - to - 7db
When they are ON Line .. My Noise Margin = 5db - to - 3db  ( The noise is worse since they have fiddled with their line )
Note: My Noise Margin Profile = 6db
And although I can't explain or prove it.... Our lines must be touching ( Interacting ) at some point. ( For what they do... To Effect Me! )

Note!
Considering their mate was suposed to have fixed their telephone line on Saturday... Things Can't Be Right!
Coz... Yesterday they pulled the telephone line down from the top of their house even more   :o

Thanks!

Zoe
