How do I disable FF
« on: July 01, 2010, 09:28:56 PM »

After all these years for the first time of wanting to disable Firefox and use IE I can't find how to re-set the option of which browser to use by default.

I have tried both checking or/and unchecking the option in Internet Option to check if IE is the default browser but that does not make any difference.

So, how do I go about being able to chose which browser to use.
Thanks.

Maybe you have to reboot first.

How about just removing FF and see what happens.

Ok, I finally found it.

In "Internet Options > Programs" there is the option to "Re-set web settings"
(This is a slightly different layout than the picture above, but does the same thing)
This then reverts the opening back to IE. (In my case this is IE6)

Then to revert back to FF, I chose the Firefox safe mode, then under "Tools > Options > Advanced" chose the option to "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"

It seems a bit of a rigmarole if you needed to do it very often, which fortunatley I hope I don't have to.
I do have the IE View Add-on option but for some reason it would not allow me to do what I needed to.

In Windows you need to go to Start Menu (or Control Panel in later versions) and select " Default Programs"  this is where you choose which application is used for a specific purpose.

All you have to do is set IE as default and to always check.

Then put a link to FF on desktop so when you want to use FF you click the FF link, you may get a notice it is not default but just ignore it.

That is the way I do it and I also have Opera link on desktop to do same thing.

If you take off the check in all browsers apart from IE you will not get the default message at all.

I was using IE6 up untill a few weeks back and you need to upgrade, I resited for a year or more but some sites do not render correctly now with IE6.

All you have to do is set IE as default and to always check.
For some reason either I can't find it or my version of XP SP3 does not have the setting "set IE as default"

In Windows you need to go to Start Menu (or Control Panel in later versions) and select " Default Programs"  this is where you choose which application is used for a specific purpose.
I found I can access IE easier by going to "Start > Set Program Access and Defaults" then change the setting in the Custom option. This is obviously better than my original way of using the "Re-set web settings" options.

But getting back to FF is not quite as simple.
So far the only way I have found is by using the FF shortcut in the programs menu then selecting the always use option, which is not to bad a way around..

I've never encountered any problems with it and as I don't actually use it very much just don't see the point in upgrading something that is basically unused.

Unused by yourself maybe but to a malicious attacker the presence of IE6 on your machine is a free entry ticket to your system.

Surely there's no risk if it's not running, is there?

We all have programs that "phone Home" or even just check for updates, so in a way "a browser" is being used at times that we are not aware of.

Although I don't think that is so much the problem but with things such as watching videos on-line is where people can exploit your system, because don't forget, everything and anything you see on your screen has to be downloaded onto your PC to begin with and it's easy for hackers to included files (virus files mainly) hidden within a video.

Since I don't use Windows auto updates and my IE6 is normally not running or phoning home I don't think there is any risk.

There is always some program or other doing something or other, but the main problem is "usually" the person in front of the keyboard opening or downloading from either unsavoury websites or sites that have been compromised.

You can stop anything from phoning home if you know the URL address or IP.

Just put it in hosts file.

127.0.0.1 google.com
127.0.0.1 microsoft.com

I think you can use IP's but not 100% sure

127.0.0.1 188.65.112.30

188.65.112.30
kitz.co.uk

Maybe not.
