Trainers On The Line
« on: July 28, 2010, 02:53:22 PM »

Hi  :)

One of the telephone poles at the end of our street has got a pair of trainers hanging from the main line.
The line is also very saggy compared to all the other lines attached to the pole.
( Think it's a main line coz it looks thicker than the others  :-\  )

Our telephone line doesn't connect to the telephone pole with the Trainers .. Thank God!  ::)
Our telephone line fortunately connects to the telephone pole at the opposite end of our street.

My Question Is...
Could the trainers still have a detrimental efect to our broadband connection?

Coz...
1) Throughput Speed never gets even close to my Sync Speed.
2) Quite often have slow speed test results.
3) Sometimes have bouts of ridiculously slow speeds - Like.. 0.75mbps :'(

Note: Rebooted my Router last night to try and get my Sync a little lower... So as to keep my noise margin from dropping down to 3.3db

Today's Router Stats
Attenuation... Down = 35.0 | Up = 17.2
Noise Margin... Down = 6.3 | Up = 12.6
Sync Speed... Down = 12073 | Up = 1020

Thanks!

Hi Zoe,

I suggest it's highly improbable that they'll have any affect at all.

If you look at BT overhead cables they usually have steel catenary wire which just provides mechanical strength.
You'll see some horrific sights after a storm with massive boughs resting on lines but they seem not to affect the lines at all.

Kind regards,
Walter

I agree with Walter, and would just add a comment about your issues:

None of these things will have anything to do with your physical connection. If the line were damaged by something landing on it, it would affect your connection speed and stability, not just your throughput.

Thanks .. Walter & Eric  ;)

It was just with having such slow speeds... The hanging trainers were starting to make me wonder

Guess kids threw them up there for a laugh.
Openreach Van pulled up in the street the other day - & - We thought... " Great! They're here to take the trainers down "
Nope
Trainers still there... Blowing in the Wind!

Thanks!
