Forcing the router to the modulation you need
« on: July 20, 2010, 11:33:50 PM »

If one's router is set to, say Gdmt 992.3 annex A and should be on Gdmt 992.5. Can it be 'forced' to the required one?

I seem to recall that there might be something like that for Speedtouchs

Some models certainly can be 'forced'.

The Netgear DG834 for example has a mode = auto / ADSL1  / ADSL2 option.

I use the DMT tool on my Netgear DG834GT and this allows me to choose ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL2+ mode with a resync.

Version 7 of the DMT tool works for the following routers:
Speedtouch 510v6, 516, 536, 546, 576, 585, 608, 706, 716, 780

It's a negotiation so if the exchange end doesn't think the "forced" setting will work it won't connect.
Basically I think you can force down but not up. So forcing .3 to .5 is unlikely to work.

Thanks,

I cannot recall seeing a 992.4 mentioned anywhere. Was there one?

I tried it with a 585v7 several months ago and can confirm that it does work.

A decent guide for the CLI commands can be seen @ http://community.plus.net/library/hardware/forcing-adsl-modulation-on-thomson-585v7/

Hi
see the overrider : Please note that if you are some distance from your exchange in most cases forcing  adsl2+ (g.992.5) will not work as the dynamic line management (DLM) will over ride your setting.

I run ADSL2+ okay on my longish line (of 55 dB attenuation) but I find it less stable than ADSL2 and I prefer to run ADSL2 mode on my line.

@CurlyWhirly

Out of nosiness :o :) What differences between the two modulations in sync and actual throughput do you see?

Not much difference in sync and actual throughput but in ADSL2+ mode the line seems to get a lower SNR margin compared to ADSL2 despite similar sync rates.

and with higher attenuation is my observation.

As the general view is that attenuation related to speed, is to this :baby: a puzzle. I'm guessing that the ADSL2+ speed estimators include the factors in the calculation?

BTW I don't think my record with sweepstakes is above the lowest decile. ;D
