What Does It Mean?
« on: July 10, 2010, 02:19:01 PM »

Hi  :)

I've just found this in my router log...

Sat, 2010-07-10 10:59:42 - lcp_rprotrej: Rcvd short Protocol-Reject packet!

Never seen anything like that before

Can anyone tell me what this means please?

Thanks!

The bit in the middle of the log item should read 'lcp_protrej' and it's short for 'LCP protocol rejected'. LCP is the protocol used when your router logs into your ISP, so it looks as though your ISP rejected one login attempt because of some confusion over protocols. Having read your saga of fun with your ISP's new systems, I imagine that this was another manifestation of that, and hopefully it was only a one-off.

Hi Eric  :)

Thanks For The Explanation!

Even though my internet is now so much better since Talk Talk applied the Fix to my exchange - & - I changed to using PPPoA and VC-Based.
Unfortunately! ..  Don't think the story is over just yet

Reckon AOL or rather should I say Talk Talk .. Has taken on so many customers it's now struggling to cope with them all.
This resulted in a major BB outage for both AOL and Talk Talk customers on Wednesday night.
See my post here : http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/aol/3868700-everyone-happy.html?fpart=2&vc=1
It involved all exchanges connected to Manchester and Birmingham hubs.
Exchange lists are here if anyone wants to see: http://www.talktalkmembers.com/content/view/182/153/

Re: Sat, 2010-07-10 10:59:42 - lcp_rprotrej: Rcvd short Protocol-Reject packet!

What Was Odd! ... That's All There Was!
The rest of the log looked perfectly normal.
NO - LCP Down - or - LCP Up
NO - Disconnections
NO - Loss Of Sync
Nothing!
Except for the connection entries for my.. Desktop, Laptop, Sons Xbox, etc. - & - The entries of me signing into the router.

The Reason I Checked The Log When I Did...
At approx 2pm the internet suddenly went from being 100% perfect - to - Slow as a snail!
I'm talking mega slow  :(
Then at about 2.30pm ... Internet speeds suddenly returned to normal again!

I'm presuming you mean the r in mine...

Note!
The only thing that happened this morning at 10:59am
My mum answered a strange phone call ( Number Withheld )
Could hear my mum saying... " I can't understand you " - & - My mum put the phone down.
2 Seconds Later... Phone Rings Again!
Once again - My mum couldn't even understand what the woman was saying - & - Put the phone down.
We've been having an awful lot of strange calls since AOL took over our phone line.
Often Claiming to be phoning about our... Computer, Broadband, Phone Line.
Sometimes they leave strange phone numbers like... 01234567890

Thanks!  ;)
