ADSL type of connection
« on: June 17, 2010, 09:11:22 AM »

Is there a way of testing for what type of service is being provided on a particular line...ADSLMax/Fixed ADSL etc?

Hi Treasure and welcome,

Yes but, as you might expect, it's a little more complex than you might at first think.

1. Do a 17070 option 2 Quiet line test. If you only get the line number identified you are on a fully unbundled service such as Car Phone Warehouse. If you get the identifier and then asked for options you are on a BT Wholesale service which could be BT itself or any ISP using BT's services.

2.  Finding out the rest of the information can be trickier. The way I do it is to plug in a 2Wire HGV2700 modem EDIT (without bothering to enter any user name or password) and print off the diagnostics page data. That will usually tell you at what rate the line is capped and below what G.DMT mode you have from which your service type can be deduced.

2ND EDIT You'll see some typical examples here:-

Kind regards,

>>  ADSLMax/Fixed ADSL etc?

You can usually take a good guess at whether its Max/fixed rate from looking at your linestats.
A trained eye will normally be able to tell from some of the common giveaways that show up for fixed rate.

Line stats from your router should also be able to tell you if you are on adsl1/adsl2+

You can also attempt to use the BTw performance test, if you cant complete the test then its likely you are on LLU.
If you can complete it..  then it will give you a bit more info about any IP profiles...  and also another indicator if you are on a fixed rate product.
