Disconnections new router needed i think
« on: June 12, 2010, 10:23:34 AM »

Well the problem i'm having is at random times the router just disconnects, the uptime of the router may last about 2 days a week or 1 day. This as only started to happen this month or so now. I have my netgear DG835gt plugged into the NTE5 socket and 1 phone which is now not plugged in, so just the router in the circuit ATM. Last time it dropped was yesterday evening around 5pm, oh and i've changed the micro filter. My router stats are

Connection Speed 5856 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 17.0 db

I'm using Firmware Version V1.02.14 in the router, its running the original firmware that came with the router last year.
I gave my isp (eclipse) a call the other day, they ran some tests on the line and they didn't see any problems or disconnections on the line. So where to go now, i guess a new replacement router. Can anyone point me to a good router thanks.
And i'm using the router wired i've disabled the wireless.

I have the same problem with Plusnet but not contacted them yet and just been testing at my end for the last three weeks.

I also have the DG834GT and NTE5 socket and one phone.

Today I have double filtered the phone with two new filters and that has made a change but time will tell.

When you unplug the phone cable do you lose connection?

I did so this got me thinking about filters.

I was also thinking of a new router so got one off Ebay and setting it all up on another computer so I can do and easy and quick change over, it is also the DG834GT.

Don't use the latest Netgear firware (1.03.23) as you will not be able to delete any rules!.

Since not having the phone cable plugged in, the line as not dropped that was from 5pm yesterday evening. AS i said it could do the drop at any time of the day, i'll leave the phone unplugged over the weekend see how that turns out. BTW which netgear DG834GT firmware is best to use, i did notice alot of problems with the firmware (1.03.23) when reading up about it.

@redknight: Does the router log give any clues as to what's happening? If you see entries like "LCP down" then you may be getting PPP disconnections, not ADSL disconnections. This could be due to a number of reasons, and may not be the fault of the router.

PPP disconnections are breaks in your login to your ISP. When they happen, your router stays connected to the exchange but you lose access to the internet until the login is reestablished, which should happen automatically.

I am using DGteam firmware (V1.03.22 - DGTeam Rev. 1007), not latest but one back.

On spare router I have put  the netgear firmware again not the latest but one back.

Just Check stats of router its not dropped, uptime so far 20hrs, this is with no phone plugged in.

It is easy.

Just make sure you get the right firmware for the device.

Go to router and select upgrade, locate where you extracted the firmware and select it and go.

BUT.  Make sure you download the Netgear recovery tool:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/263
Just in case it does go wrong.

It does not state the DG834GT but it does work so long as you use Windows XP.

And do not interupt the proccess of upgrade.

Hi
@redknight.

Try routerstats  . A very good trouble shooting tool . It also shows the 3different  up times
using telnet,summary page

Lan   that is the total time since last reboot   note 1

Wan  that is the connection time to the exchange  calculated from SF note 2

PPPoA  that is the time connected to your ISP  note 3

notes
1 the netgear command line stats  fail to report this correctly never more than 1day 23hrs 59 secs ,the netgear stats page does in hrs  .

2 This is not available from the bare router stats

3 The Stats page calls this WAN PPoA

Something else about the up times , some error counters only reset after a reboot , others reset after a resynch with the exchange .

Britbrat hows the connection working out, any drops? I see your using double filtering, is that were you plug 1 filter into the NTE5 socket, then another filter into that first filter and then phone and your router?
It's been 47hrs with no drops here, all i have in the NTE5 socket is my router.

Yeah, one connected to the other is series but only on the phone, the router does not have a filter but it used to untill I removed everything to cut down on possible faulty filters.

I am still getting problems and will have to do what you are doing and go straight into the BT socket with a new router, I have already done it a few times with old router and it still droped.

I have also started to lose sinc with ISP but that could also be a router problem.

Strange thing is it can be OK most of the day and all night then for a few hours in between it goes all over the place.

See my other thread:
http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,7500.0.html

Just had a thought, if someone was tapping your phone line would they use a filter?  LOL, paranoia over.

Like this right now:

Hi BritBrat,

Have you tried the QLT during one of the drops?

It's interesting to note that you had an almost flat drop for about three minutes before it climbs and goes spiky again?

Kind regards,
Walter

QLT

What is that?

EDIT

It just sunk in.

Quiet Line Test

No but that is a good idea.

It did not disconnect that time but I was expecting it to and keep eye on router lights.

This is how it continued:
