O2 Wireless Box Question
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:38:09 AM »

Hi all,

When I switched my computer on yesterday morning I found I wasn't connected to the internet.I called O2 who said that overnight there had been a firmware update applied. He then told me to reboot the router.
After the reboot the connection came back fine.

Is it normal after a firmware update that you need to reboot the router as connection is lost,or should it do it automatically?

I am not using a wireless connection.

A firmware update will always require a reboot, but you shouldn't have to do it manually. But I've no experience of remote updates, so maybe there's some problem with the way O2 do their updates, which leaves the user having to reboot manually.

Thanks for your reply Eric  :)

Obviously if I had known the router needed a reboot I would have done it.I might give O2 a call and  see why it didn't do it automatically

When O2 upgraded the firmware on my router there was an automatic re-sync......probably just a glitch in the process that yours didn't.

Presumably you now have firmware 8.2.23.0 ?

Hi UncleUB

Please let me know what the performance of your wireless box 2 has been since you had the update? I have has mine upgarded today from 7.4.20.5 to 8.2.23.0, and I am curious to see what other people's experience has been with this new o2 update.

Many thanks.

I've read that it breaks VPN, but otherwise improves security and stability.

Hi Happy37. :)

Its fine, tbh I am one of those people who just leave things alone.I never start tweaking/messing with my router/connection.I am unfortunately on a long line and with O2 manage to get a good stable 2.5 mb speed, which is ok for me as I don't do any p2p,gaming or big downloads.
When I was with BT (pre Oct 2009) I was only getting around 1,5mb

Yes everything is fine at present

I am curious to see what other people's experience has been with this new o2 update.

The update for me transformed the O2 TG585v7. Here's an extract of the current status of my router :-

Uptime:   40 days, 23:06:16
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   19.5 / 38.5
FEC Errors (Up/Down):   8,203 / 73,217,034
CRC Errors (Up/Down):   8,203 / 11,546
HEC Errors (Up/Down):   6,831 / 7,719

Before the update the uptime wouldn't have reached 10 days let alone 40 days !

I've also found that I can revert to a 6dB Target SNR without nightly disconnections even though the SNRM can drop to a minimum 2.5dB. Before on a 9dB Target it would disconnect when the SNRM went below 5dB.
