@ Jeffbb,

Noting that BT's estimates from presumably some form of performance database never were very good in the past so I suspect it's not much better now.

@ Kitz,

Perhaps you could revise your speed estimator once there are a few more samples of VDSL profiles 8c and 17a available?
It would be a very valuable tool to know what a line should be capable of to help the likes of Bald Eagle still struggling in a mass of sometimes mis-information.
The down side is that we lesser mortals are not supposed to access the VDSL modem's top-secret performance data but we know some folk that can !

Kind regards,
Walter

They do always tend to err on the side of extreme caution.   The average bod has no idea about things like the effects of EMI, nor about how they can improve their line.. so those lines would drive any averages down.    Mine says 17Mb, yet on Annex_A I should be able to get 24Mbps.   I used to be able to get 24Mbps on Annex_M but Im still seeing a slow degradation of my line, that I know BTo wont do anything about.

Ive spent the last few hours making some changes to the adsl checker, obviously some of these are cosmetic due to the fact that I pull info from other sources, but there are a couple of new things.

In particular if anyone has an FTTC enabled exchange, I would be grateful if they would like to be a guinea pig please, before it goes live.
{link removed}

I will probably be withdrawing Orange from being listed on the LLU side.... as I assume the confusion is because Orange now rely heavily on BTw based services and were disbanding their own LLU network.

Edit:-  Orange info now withdrawn.

We have FTTC cabinets installed around the area (exchange is Eaglescliffe, NEEC) and I know some have gone live.  The checker now returns:

"Available in some areas01.09.11"   Note - the lack of a space between areas and the date.

Colin

However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
The following services are available in your location:

BT Wholesale ADSL

BT Wholesale SDSL
AOL LLU
O2 / Be LLU
Bulldog LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU

But no mention of it in the Kitz checker.I also see UKonline is still showing in the Kitz checker(didn't they close down some time ago)

Sorted - Thanks Colin... the only test number I had showed just "Available", so wasnt sure what other info could be coming back for other areas.  :)

All mention of UKO  should be pulled from the new version. Is there something still there thats coming up?

hmmm  very good point!
The database treats the 2 ISPs seperate.  It may be an idea for me to try and merge these.

OK..  Ive now put it live.

I will have to think further on the Tiscali/TalkTalk situation as this has a knock on effect for a lot of things and will require a bit longer to find a solution.

Ive deleted any refs to the test link on here, just so that the Search Engine bots dont trawl it.

Kitz - did you get anywhere with the enquiry on SDWSTCH 22 Oct)? My concern mainly is that if County are to use Kitz and 'Samdoesn'tknow' for exchange information then it is possible that some of the limited funds available might bypass areas that need them.

NOW THEN! Some advice from the experts please. From the info I posted here, BT tell me SDWSTCH is 'hosted' in the SDSTRRN building, 3-4km away. This would, presumably, explain the poor performance we see here. TalkTalk claim to have unbundled our exchange (SDWSTCH) on 31/10. One of my villagers is now on a business plan with TT and gets 8.126mb at the router and over 7mb at the PC. How? Admittedly he is only around 500m from a cab, but??? Does this mean we actually have a chunky pure copper cable between SDSTRRN and SDWSTCH the size of a Golden Gate suspension cable, capable of delivering 8mb to cabinets?

I tried to post the jpg of 'speeds' around him (as low as 0.13mb) but the quality is poor
