O2 has finally released its home phone line rental today.

http://www.o2.co.uk/broadband/homephone

It must be bundled with and O2 broadband package.

Pardon me for being a dim wit but O2 line rental charges are no different to BT's. You still need a BT line.
I can't see the advantage in changing, or am I missing something?

£12.50 for unlimited calls and line rental is surely cheaper than BT?

BT unlimited: £4.99 a month plus £11.54 line rental = £16.03
O2 Anytime: £12.50 per month Includes line rental

PS: Be are about to announce their own landline service.

Don't forget some of the Bolt ons BT include for free are chargeable with O2..I get 1571 and caller display included in my BT evening and weekend plan...£11.54 a month(paperless billing)Downside is its a 12 month contract, but saying that I think O2's is a 12 month contract.
So if I add £2.75 to £9.50........£12.25 a month for the same features.(71p worse off)But if I have the anytime calls plan....BT...£11.54 +£4.99 =£16.53.
O2 line rental + anytime calls +caller display and 1571 = £15.25...a saving of £1.28

And free evening calls start at 6pm unlike BT's 7pm.

If I add to UncleUB's post that I have a mobile account with O2 so get a discount on the broadband + 200 free mins. per month (which I have never used yet) I see myself saving a tidy sum over a quarter. Although many people will not be in the same situation and therefore would make a small saving I don't see enough to make a good competition.
Before moving my broadband to O2 I did have the Total Broadband package with BT. It was only when I could not get sense from the customer support for rectifying a line fault. Which was rectified within a few days of me cancelling all but the line rental, at no extra cost to me because of the way the contracts changed.
I certainly won't be enticed to put all my eggs in one basket again without a very good reason to do so.

Sorry UncleUB for going off topic there. I will say thank you for raising the topic.

YW  :)

I was in a similar situation to you SS44,left BT BB and joined O2 last October.I was so fed up with BT's useless Indian support.I have an O2 simplicity sim so only pay £7.50 a month for BB.The UK based support is excellent when/if you need it
My line rental is with BT and I can't see much of a saving to entice me away.I am also registered with BT's prioritised fault service as I am disabled, which means any line fault get sorted very quickly.
I think if you have your line rental with a 3rd party it seems to take longer to get any faults fixed.
These are only my observations and everyone will have different ones.

I agree with your observation. A number of the operators with lower fees have not yet perfected the complex interface with BT Wholesale who deal with the Communications Providers (CP) and Openreach who deal with the physical lines. Furthermore BT O attempt to restrict their activities to the minimum which is why you have to have a strong determination to succeed. If you leave the line rental with BT their departmental interaction seems less encumbered and formalised than that with a different CP. You can also access BT's on-line help system, assuming you still have internet connection. This method seems to avoid much of the Indish problems. It is still vital that you differentiate between a phone line problem and a broadband one.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter,

I am speaking from first hand experience.Back in 2007 I had my line rental with Talk Talk.I developed a line fault and the length of time I spent on the phone to Talk Talk was unbelievable.I ended up going through their escalation team, till at the finish I moved back to BT

And believe me you soon tire of Thunderclap Newmans,Something in the air song being played while you are kept on hold. ;D
