Switched ISP loss of Line DB
« on: April 16, 2010, 12:36:00 PM »

i just switched from BT Broadband Option 3 to Sky Unlimited  LLU

Line stats with BT

Down 8128kbps UP 448

Line attenuation down was 17.0db

Max throughput achieved was 7.1mb

Now I am with Sky Broadband I am very pleased

Sky Broadband Max

19998 Down/ 860 up < router stats

Speedtest latest 17.34 down and 0.72 up

Now my query Just out of curiosity is

with bt i had 17.0db line attenuation down and SKY i have 22.0db down,

I take it its a loss within the exchange??? going from IPSTREAM to LLU ??

Cheers

Hi and welcome

The change in the reported value of attenuation isn't a loss as such. The attenuation isn't a simple fixed value - it's a calculated average of the attenuations of the various frequency tones used to make up the ADSL signal. With Sky LLU you're now on ADSL2+, which makes use of many higher frequency tones than basic ADSL does. These higher frequencies have higher attenuation, so the calculated average is a higher figure. In addition to that, different routers report different levels of attenuation on the same connection, so if you're now using a different router, that may also result in a different reported value.

Ah i see interesting,
Just wondered if it would impact on my line etc, but you have cleared that up,
I am using the same router, managed to find a way of using the same one with sky, handy indeed :)
Perhaps I should try the one they supplied me, see how that works with line stats etc

I just love my trusty BT Voyager 2500v

Many Thanks

Now off to browse this forum, lots of interesting posts and tools :)
