Malwarebytes Download
« on: March 31, 2010, 07:14:33 AM »

Hi all,

I downloaded Malwarebytes last week and its fine no problem,so I passed the link on to my brother in law.He clicked on the blue button (free version),but instead of being taken to cnet (which is where I downloaded it from) he was taken to a site called majorgeeks.com.
He phoned me late last night and said he didn't know where to click on download Malwarebytes from, and it wanted £9.95.As I wasn't at my computer I wasn't able to help him.
I have clicked on the blue free download button at Malwarebytes this morning and it took me to a completely different site.

A site called fileforum ?

Strange.

I have been to the Malwarebytes site and clicked on the blue button for the free version, as both you and your friend have done, and was also taken to the majorgeeks site.

Majorgeeks in itself is a perfectly reliable site.....but they do seem to want money....not so good.

The site you link to is unknown to me.

I think the problem is that yesterday there was a new version of Malwarebytes ( both free and paid-for ) and at a guess, their download servers are congested with folks updating and as a consequence they are directing you to one or other of the download mirror-sites ( and trying to trap the unwary into buying instead of accessing the freebie.

For hassle free freebie download, go to http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Hi
There has been an update ( on 30/03/2010). Seems as if someone is trying to make money . See http://www.malwarebytes.org/

There is an option to download FREE version or to Buy Full version

What's the problem?  ???

It's been like that for ages, and developing software costs time = money.
You have a choice of the free version (which is pretty good anyway) or the more comprehensive paid for version.

I don't have a problem...........It was just a query that's all

Just to add,

My B.I.L downloaded the free version of malwarebytes from Cnet.He did a full scan and found just one bit of adware, which has since been binned. :)

I sent them this email to support@malwarebytes.org yesterday (18 May 2011):

Dear Sir/Madam,

On the above page (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free)
there is broad heading across the page
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free

Why then does the Download Now button take you to another page (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1), where it is apparently not free (Windows (All) / Shareware; $24.95 / 12,091,897 downloads) ???

This is extremely misleading.
Is it a mistake or intended?

Regards,
xxxxxxxx

I always go to the source http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

and there are two options on the page, one is for the FREE edition and the other for their Pro edition which is very clearly marked and is and always has been chargeable.

AdrianH, that is the same link that dranreb posted.

@ dranreb, welcome to the Forum.. :) ...........you have been linked to a mirror download site which in itself is legitimate.
As to the cost element ...........well,  Malwarebytes is a shareware product, meaning that you can download it and use it on free terms.......unless you want the full functionality in which case you must upgrade to the "full" product at the cost as stated.
The lack of functionality in the free version means........no automatic updates
                                                                              ........no flash scans
                                                                              ........no resident protection

So, for a manual, on demand scanner only simply download/use the program free.......or if you want the full thing, pay the cost as stated.
Neither Malwarebytes nor the mirrors are trying to con you, it's a question of the end user understanding what is meant by "shareware", ie a program which is time limited or, as in this case, function limited unless and until paid for.
