TalkTalk in the central village
« on: March 10, 2010, 03:14:06 PM »

Gentlefolk,

Today I helped  someone who had discovered that his new TalkTalk broadband would work in the test socket but not otherwise.
(Edit to add speed)
I did the usual of removing ring wires and a length of redundant cable and hey presto we obtained a connection of sorts with a download throughput of only 1749 kbps and which is illustrated below.

I also tried the 17070 test to discover that the line number identification is all that is available so it's impossible to check for a quiet line or test the ringback.

As there were quite a few CRC and HEC errors, I browsed through the Huawei HG520b modem / router's web interface (192.168.1.1 admin admin) and came across an ATM loop-back test in their diagnostics page which fails whenever it is tested.

I then rang the TalkTalk help line to find out what was wrong.
I was asked what ATM was so I explained what I was doing.
I was then asked whether there was a connection to which I said yes and was then told I had a line of over 5 km (probably nearer to 4 km actually) and that the speed was dependent on line distance so that was all that mattered.

After speaking to the level 2 supervisor I was told that the ATM loop-back test was not enabled in the exchange.
I.e. TalkTalk have the very minimum of diagnostics at their disposal.

I was also told that TalkTalk are upgrading their exchange equipment but there were no details for THCN.

The engineer rang back as promised to say they had tried to increase the speed but to no avail.

It was a perfectly polite conversation but rather lacking in support capabilities.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi
Doesn't seem too bad for the line length . The only slightly odd thing is the CRC errors upstream are higher than downstream ??

That's interesting about the test socket Walter.

My stats are similar and I have my router plugged into the test socket all the time.I kept it there after BT Indian support always use to tell me to plug into the test socket and reboot the router everytime I called them  ;D

I do get a better upstream as I'm with O2 LLU.

Hi Jeff,

It just seems poor @ 1.7 Mbps when compared with the O2 service @ 1.3 Mbps which is at least another 2 km on.

Perhaps I'm just getting too wound up !

Kind regards.
Walter

Edit- Thanks Uncle it's nice to put things in perspective. W

Hi
@walter  . I think its quite good you would only expect about 2000Kbps for your attenuation(63.5db) ,it may even be more ,most routers can only report 63.5 max . Your line length appears to be at least 4.6 Km.

see expected synch rate

quote It just seems poor @ 1.7 Mbps when compared with the O2 service @ 1.3 Mbps which is at least another 2 km on.

not quite sure what you mean ?  what are the relative attenuation / SNR margin figures ? for comparison.

your synch rate is quote : Bandwidth Down/Up(kbps)  2656 / 544  above the expected   :)

@ Oranged

I know this one is only ADSL and the other is ADSL2+ but I always expect miracles now !
One thing did surprise me with the O2 is that ADSL2+ seems to have made a big difference although I thought at extended distances the difference might be quite small.
Perhaps it's the effect of the bespoke 2Wire firmware that is the main cause for the much better performance?

@ Jeff

The O2 service is right up in the hills with at least another 2 km cable run.
I haven't yet worked out how to get the real Attenuation out of the HG520b so I don't have comparitive figures yet.
I was also hoping the attenuation would be a little bit lower here.

Does anyone know if it's possible to see more detailed data from the Huawei ?

Kind regards,
Walter
