O2 service - Quite astonishing
« on: March 08, 2010, 07:14:34 PM »

Gentlefolk,

The attached picture is of a 2Wire 2700HGV modem on a new O2 line commissioned this morning.
I realise that it might deteriorate a little over time but it is looking quite promising.
This line is on the other major branch of the cable which is performing very badly with an IP profile of 135 kbps as you'll see in my penultimate post in this link.

http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,6936.0.html

Perhaps others are used to such performance on a line of 80.7 dB attenuation @ 300 Khz but to me it seems quite extraordinary.
I never expected to see such dense bitloading in this part of the jungle.

It also seems to demonstrate that the line being too long is yet more obfuscation.
It would perhaps be more accurate to say the cable charasteristics and noise, together with a different O2 ADSL2+ Broadcom DSLAM produces exceedingly good speeds for the line length.

Kind regards,
Walter

I'm amazed, not just by the stats, but by the fact that O2 agreed to supply on a 80.7dB attenuation.

They have been known to refuse a 60+dB connection.

Gentlefolk,

A trick I've discovered using another 2Wire HGV2700 is that you can connect it on to a broadband-enabled line without entering any user-data and the diagnostics page will give you a complete summary of the line characteristics together with the bit loading diagram after synchronising the modem only. When I'm in troubleshooting mode in the jungle, this is an invaluable test tool and much cheaper than say a JDSU tester at a mere £7+ K.

Happy Easter and kind regards,
Walter

Well I know my attenuation is not 80db,but still very high,so I guess I must be very lucky(I am using the O2 supplied router)

@ Unc,

You might just have made a typo ?
If so, there's quite a good chance your attenuation is more than 63.5 as that is the maximum allowed and therefore that Thompson modems usually report - unless O2 have adjusted their firmware.

I expect there are others, but the 2Wire is the only one I'm aware of that provides two attenuation readings on their diagnostics page, one specifically @ 300 Khz and the other I assume is the running average over many tones, similar to the usual calculation.

Perhaps somebody else might elaborate ?

Kind reagrds,
Walter

Gentlefolk,

Back to the original thread subject, we've just looked at the training differences after operating the O2 line since 8 March 2010.
The only major difference is that the line has now been capped at 8192 kbps instead of the initial 16004 kbps, but this is only of academic interest.
The downstream sync has dropped from 1267 to 1203 kbps and the upstream has risen from 516 to 552 kbps.
I believe O2 will sometimes adjust these parameters if you need a more symetrical performance.

Kind regards,
Walter

Both the upstream and downstream figures will fluctuate each time you perform a resync.

O2 or rather the Be DSLAMs can be configured for Annex_M which allows higher upstream, but theres no point on long lines as it uses some of the downstream tones for the upstream...  therefore your downstream would reduce.

Yes astonishing!!!!!!!!!!

Now telling Access customers to cut down usage or be thrown out.

But they won't tell you what you used or what you have to cut down to and no way to monitor it.

So far customers are guessing it is between 5Gig and 80Gig, quite a large range so not a lot of use.

This is very good for a line with those stat's its hardly any wonder that many engineer's I've talked to use 2wire routers. It's just a shame more routers aren't this good. I would be very interested to how the line is performing a couple of weeks and months down the line.

Hi Aaron,

It's still doing very well as is illustrated in the picture below.
It's a great shame an ISP of renowned excellence doesn't stock the modem without all the clobbering that a large CP just loves to add.
There would surely be a great demand for it.

Another very useful facility is that the diagnostics page will work as soon as the line has synchronised so you don't have to enter the username and password which is a little tricky.
I keep one such modem as my preferred ADSL test equipment.

Kind regards,
Walter
