Yahoo Account Service
« on: March 01, 2010, 02:27:51 PM »

I have just received the email below allegedly from Yahoo Accounts, I have not made any changes and I'm concerned it is a scam.  Can anyone tell me if this is or is not genuine Yahoo information please?

Peter

How can they add a secret question to your account without you knowing about it ?

If it is used as part of the log on security, then when asked for how are you going to reply if you don't know what it is in the first place.

I would send an email to yahoo for them to explain and forward them the link you have received.Until you have received an answer from them I wouldn't alter anything to your account

I had something similar a couple of months ago.
They wanted me to go back into my account wherein lived my then existing login details. password etc. and where they that instituted another section in which there was a list of preset secret questions. From that list, you selected a question and then inserted an answer known only to you.

I thought it was a scam and did not do anything about it.....the result was that I could not get into mt Yahoo Mail until I had done the routine they wanted.
So I did eventually accede to the request and all has been well since.
There is no evidence that the thing was a scam.

I think the request is genuine.

If I go to the URL in peter's original post, my Opera browser built in anti-phising gizmo tells me that it is a genuine Yahoo site and gives me the yellow ok ( meaning genuine site as long as no financial transaction is to be made )

Well that was quick!  Here is the reply I got:
After reading TuftedDuck's reply I'm not sure where this leaves me now. :-\
So I'll leave 'Well Alone' for now.
Peter

Ah, you did well to leave it alone...obviously a scam based on an older genuine episode.

Well done for reporting it to Yahoo.

The main thing to remember about any kind of suspected phishing/fraudulent activity is to leave alone until you have contacted the company involved and await their instructions.

Hmm, don't think so....

That was, as it says, an automated reply, i.e. just acknowledging receipt. Proves nothing.

It looks genuine to me, but is rather confusingly worded. I suspect your earlier post was nearer the mark.

Easiest way to find out would be to log in normally and check, surely?
(but don't click on any links to do so)

A question for the OP (Peter?):
The link you have posted, is that the "description" of the link in the message you got or is it the "target". It is very easy to have a link that looks like it goes to one place but actually goes somewhere else.
You can usually tell where it goes by hovering the mouse over it or right-clicking on it and looking at its properties.
