Log-off problem
« on: July 22, 2007, 09:34:20 PM »

Evening All,

Having an intermittent problem with the home pc; hoping someone can help.

We're running XP SP 2 with 2 admin accounts and two limited accounts.  On occassion, the limited accounts (for kids) go to a black screen when they log off.  The PC seems to carry on working, but there seems to be no way of getting away from the blank screen.  This makes it a bit hard to switch the PC off safely (we can't!)..... Any suggestions before we b****r the HDD?

TIA

Try this:

When confronted with the blank screen try pressing the Windows Key+L to get to the logon screen.  Once at the logon screen, if the kids' account is still showing as logged in then logon to your account, open up Task Manager, click on the Users tab and log other logged on users off from there.

As for switching the PC off safely in situations like this, hold in the PCs power button in for a few seconds to shut down.

Hi Dave,

No, not the same thing. I don't get the flashing cursor, or anything else on screen, just a blank, black screen.... maybe it's trying to tell me something!  ???

I was put off by the 'don't install this unless you've got the same symptoms' bit as well.....  :-\

hi john

boot the machine into safe mode, log into 1 of the kids accounts then try and log off.

if it does it sucessfully then it'll prob be an app or service running in the background thats not shutting down when its in normal mode, u can then boot to normal windows and see whats running in the background, and disable em 1 at a time then try shutting down again.

u could also try creating another limited account and c if that shuts down correctly ... if it does then do the above or stick with the new accounts.

good luck

Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup is often useful for fixing logoff problems caused by services, processes etc not closing down properly.

Even on a fully working install it can sometime improve log off performance. It might be worth a try.

There are no compatibility issues or anything with installing it.
