Google has begun to phase out support for Internet Explorer 6, the browser identified as the weak link in a cyber attack on the search engine.

Microsoft has admitted that it has known about the vulnerability "since early September" 2009 and had planned to patch it in February.

It's good to know they take security seriously. ???

In all fairness if its 9 year old as that report says, then why continue to support it.
Its not as if users cant update to IE7 or IE8 or even use an alternative browser. - Theres plenty of choice.

the browser does not support modern web standards it restricts what developers can do and is "holding the web back".

Its bad enough trying to design cross browser support, nevermind one that is so old. I know theres a couple of very minor things that this site wont work properly in IE6.. even though its only visual prettiness and or alignment... and it doesnt deal with CSS too well on some things even if youve gone to the trouble to ensure you are W3 compliant.

Maybe its just me, but I cant see what the problem is.. after all if you cant view a java app properly or flash app properly, we think nothing of updating the JRE or Flashplayer or any other piece of software.  If people had to shell out to upgrade then maybe I could understand a bit more about some people reluctance to upgrade, but they cant even use that as an excuse.

There's an interesting article from the Guardian about IE6 and the NHS:

it is still a requirement of any new web application being deployed in the NHS that it works on IE6/XP

Quite frankly anyone still using IE6 needs their bumps felt, while not perfect 7 or 8 are much improved on their predecessors.

Feels bumps.

Yes I am still using IE6, I hav etried IE7 many times and it is terrible for me but only tried IE8 once so far.

Ask yourself a question?

What browser will hackers be targeting?

IE3? don't think so IE6 maybe IE7 and IE8 most likely.

Well there are plenty of decent alternatives out there.  I only keep IE up to date for the occasions when my Firefox needs to use IEtab, which is increasingly rare these days - presumably most web developers use various browsers for testing.
