avast free edition
« on: January 20, 2010, 03:11:30 PM »

There is a new program version released today.

It will not come as a program update.

Down load new version 5.0.377 from http://www.avast.com/en-gb/index .........or from http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
......and save to desktop.

Then install over your present version if that be version 4.8.1368.
You existing licence key will be maintained as was.

If you have an older version than 4.8.1368 uninstall it and use the avast cleanup utility ( aswClear.exe from http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility )............reboot and install new version.
In this case a new key is needed.

edit to add....just upgraded mine, all went sweetly and the new version is whirring away, it is correctly reported in the XP security centre, it is using a little less resource than the previous version and the whole transition thing has been painless.  :clap2:

Avast 5 Free is now working well on Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP Pro SP3.  First impressions are very good.

Thank you, tuftedduck, for drawing this event to our attention.

I'm not sure if it's because I had the pro version but I had to download the uninstaller tool from Avast before I could install the new free version.
(That was because I received a notice telling me I had to when trying to install the new version)

However, I have to say the new version is so much tidier, neater and in my opinion more user friendly than any of the previous versions, especially the user interface.

Well done Avast.

Morning OF...yes, I think your problem was because you have the pro version.

My thread title here does state that I was talking of the free version.  :)

And a very good day to you too.
I only added that just in case anyone else comes across it.

More than anything I just wanted to say what a nice looking layout they now have.

What's the memory footprint of version 5 like?

@ orainsear.

The program file itself takes some 154 Mgbs of space.

There are two associated running processes.
AvastUI.exe............which runs at 5700 kbs

and

AvastSvc.exe............."At rest" with just the real time "file system shield" and the "behaviour shield" running this clocks about 21252 kbs. When scanning, this rises to 25248 kbs.
The only other shield I have running is the  "web shield" which runs (of course) only when my browser is open when this service goes to about 27454 kbs.

The networking, ptop and instant message I have turned off...don't indulge with these things.

I have as yet not been quick enough to establish RAM usage during auto-update.. :-[

That's on XP Sp2 .

I find that Avast 5 needs quite a bit less RAM than Avast 4.8

There seems to be little memory saving if shields are turned off.  Virtual memory management ensures that only active pages are in real memory so the unused shields will be on the paging file but not in real memory.

I agree with you, hake.

This new version has caused problems for some users........problems of a variety too numerous to mention here........although for me all has been sweetness and light.

Alwil have issued a new program update to cure some instability issues and this can be achieved via the normal "program update" function within Avast.

The latest version 5.0.396 is described as " final release" ( which I think means there is still a bit of beta about it) but I have updated to that without problem....and with no discernable effect on the function of the prog. Again, all my settings and prefs were retained without problem.

I like the new version and have had no problems with it.  The only thing I don't really like is the new "female" voice that tells you that the Virus Database has been updated.  I much preferred the old recording.  This new one reminds me of the computer in "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" that sometimes plays Mornington Crescent.  Every time time I hear Avast tell me it is updated my head hears "That was a good move Jeremy" and I find it hard to take it seriously.
