DGTeam DG834Gv3 build 849 - Block Sites Problem
« on: January 20, 2010, 10:49:35 AM »

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody out there who might be using this router with the 849 build of DG firmware can let me know if they can get the block sites functionality working?

I can't seem to get it to block any sites, for example I add the domain facebook.com to the block urls / domains list, set the block to always but I can still browser to facebook.

So I flashed back to the OEM 4.01.40 build from netgear, and on that build the block sites worked, however I can only have 1 trust IP so it's not much use to me as I have several computers in the house that I don't want to block this URL from.

Does anybody have any suggestions what might be up or is this a bug in the DGTeam firmware?

Thanks

Andy.

Do you just want to block it on one computer?

If so use the hosts file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc "hosts"

Open it with notepad but make sure no extension (.txt) is saved with it.

No,

Need to block it on the router several different computers, and an IPOD touch from being able to access facebook.

My daughter has started spending far to much time on it, like 24/7 so looking to restrict access down to a few hours a day, say between 6pm-8pm.

Host file entries don't work on the IPOD :-)

Cheers for the suggestion though,

Cheers,

Andy.

I do not have a V3 to test it but it does work on my DG834GT with DGTeam firmware.

So I guess it is a firmware issue.

Don't they, that is a let down :)

I bet they do not have ethernet connection either so how about turning the wireless off.

I have had another thought and I hope of more use.

How about using open DNS.

Parental Controls

Keeping your family safe online has never been easier. OpenDNS gives you more than 50 filtering categories to choose from. Simply check the boxes of the categories you want to block and watch your filtering take effect within minutes.

Customization

Add your favorite image and a custom message to the OpenDNS Guide and blocked pages to personalize the feel of OpenDNS for your household. Use different messages for different pages.

http://www.opendns.com

That would let you control everything and it is free.

Or for OpenDNS Deluxe Starting at US $9.95/year
