Advice - Bandwidth Monitor
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:26:54 PM »

Hi All,

On BT option 2 (20GB download limit) with the HomeHub and just received a "you've gone over your limit e-mail from BT.

Just wondering if there are any broadband monitors out there that would monitor all my network access?

Currently have home PC hard wired to HomeHub with wireless access to No 1 son's PC and No 2 son's Xbox.

Both are doing the online gaming thing and there was Xmas in the way so there was more internet going on than usual, but just wondered if there is any way of seeing who's using up all the gigabytes!  Neither seem to be (certainly not admitting) downloading large amounts, so not sure...

Realise this may be a bone question, but thought it worth a try.

Any assistance is most appreciated.

It's possible to install software on your computers to monitor their throughput - http://www.kitz.co.uk/links/download_monitors.htm, but obviously this won't work to monitor the XBox bandwidth.

There is some software MRTG or PRTG which collects data using the SNMP protocol, and may work with the homehub.  I have not dabbled in it myself and understand that it can be a bit fiddly to get working properly, however I think others on site may have had some experience.

The method I use myself is to bridge a modem to a router running custom firmware (Tomato), and this collects all the network stats.

Hi

thinkbroadband have a monitor see   here

Features

Here are some of the features we have included:

    * Monitor the Internet usage of your computer in real time- see data being sent and received
    * See daily, monthly and weekly statistics on how much you use and when
    * Set alarms to protect yourself from exceeding your monthly usage allowance, or a fair use limit
    * Pre-defined alarm profiles available to download
    * Use the stopwatch to record how fast your downloads are
    * Run a ping stream to graph how your latency varies
    * Background tests to measure your broadband performance
    * Graph your usage from multiple household computers
    * Analyse performance by protocol (e.g. VoIP, p2p, etc.) (coming soon)

Not sure if this will do it for you
even if it does not work on Xbox  then by deduction you may be able to work out where the usage is
