VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) On Linux... eg Skype.
« on: January 08, 2010, 12:37:05 PM »

I'm looking in to setting up Skype .

Anyone use VoIP on Linux, ? if so did you have any problems.
Is there any security problems as I have not used P2P before ?
Do you have to use the skype software to connect or can you use say Gizmo or other plug-in ?
Any problems using Video ?.

I know this question is slightly different from your Skype question but I would have thought it better if it were all in the same same thread.

http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=6520.new;topicseen#new

After replying to your other thread I realised you use Linux.
As I don't know anything about Linux I can only assume all of my previous comments will also be correct.

Maybe you could change the thread name to something like "Skype on Linux Question" or something similar.

I can merge the threads easily if you both agree.  :)

Thanks but No thanks , I think using a Linux distro may throw up one or two problems .

I take your point ,but I did think before I started this separate post. :) still as long as there is a link between them.

OK if we are sticking with Linux, I used Skype for quite a while with the Skype software for Linux. I mainly used that because it was written for Linux and worked very well. I never tried it with other apps as a plugin so I couldn't really comment on that score. No problems with security although I had to port forward to the computer I was using it from. The hardest part was getting the usb phone to ring for an incoming call. I managed it in the end but I can't remember how. Video of course slows things down and is not quite mature enough in my opinion, but you always have the option of not transmitting video. The audio was quite good as was the ability to speak to friends free of charge. The landline calls were very cheap as well. I don't use it now as  I have lost a number of friends from my circle (that's another story) and it's as easy to email and instant message. Have a go, you will enjoy the experience.

1. The hardest part was getting the usb phone to ring for an incoming call. I managed it in the end but I can't remember how.

2. I don't use it now

1. For me using Windows it was a case of going back to the windows audio setting and changing the setting "back" to my default setting, because the Skype setup automatically changed the settings to use the handset I was using.
But is was no big problem really, (once you knew what the problem was)

2. Likewise I stopped using it mainly because I got fed-up with people trying to contact me just for a chat when I needed to get on with some work. (Yes I know I could have set the setting not to show that I was online)

The audio set up is a little different with a Linux OS. But now I have thought about it I think the settings were in the Skype program. :oldman: Me having a senior moment.

Yes there are some audio settings in Skype.
But not knowing or using Linux I cannot coment on those.
But for Windows it was a case of setting "both" to get the correct setting.

I don't think there is anymore I can add to the question especially with it being for a Linux setup, so am bowing out whilst the going is good.

Hope you get going soon, as it will be more than worth it for contacting far flung family.

Sorry I can't help with the webcam, I never got mine working properly either. Gave up on it in the end.
Maybe obvious but have you asked on the Skype, or one of the many, Linux forums?

I'm afraid I've never done VOIP (or webcams) so I've nothing useful to offer. The Skype forum ought to be able to help.
