Unable to display current owner. in Vista
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:38:45 PM »

Hi

I have a file in my download folder "ashampoo_burning9_se.exe "Its the set up file for burning studio9 . This was originally downloaded from Ashampoo site . I used it to install burning studio9 .I used that for  a few days then I had error message. that "ash_spti"was not available.
Eventually I decided to uninstall ashampoo 9 and try to download again. The uninstall did not complete was left with the Ashampoo9 folder and the
"ash_spti" file . Tried to delete, couldn't . So when I downloaded the new Ashampoo9 I created a new Folder . That has worked perfectly.

I then managed eventually to delete the original Ashampoo9 folder with the offending "ash_spti" . I managed to take ownership  .Originally there was no owner . "Unable to display current owner." managed to change it to myself. Then deleted OK

Now the problem I have that the original setup file "ashampoo_burning9_se.exe " will NOT delete . I have the same problem with ownership
"Unable to display current owner." this time

I cannot take ownwership of it .
I have used Check disc (incase it was corrupted ) didnt do anything
If I try to do anything with it. I  cannot move it ,delete it,rename it
I am logged on as administrator .
when I use Avira to scan it I get

The scan has been done completely.

      0 Scanned directories
      2 Files were scanned
0 Viruses and/or unwanted programs were found
0 Files were classified as suspicious
      0 files were deleted
0 Viruses and unwanted programs were repaired
0 Files were moved to quarantine
      0 Files were renamed
      1 Files cannot be scanned
      1 Files not concerned
      0 Archives were scanned
      1 Warnings
      0 Notes

I have been on the internet and have found other people with same problem with different files . Unfortunately no actual successful outcomes.

Regards Jeff

I was just about to suggest that.

Another way I "sometimes" find works is to create a new folder, drag and move the offending file or folder into the new folder, then, delete the new folder.

Basically what is possibly happening is that the registry is holding onto information for a file/folder which has already been removed.

Hi
@OF   Thanks for the reply  :)
quote  Another way I "sometimes" find works is to create a new folder

I tried that but it would not work . Everything that I tried through windows ,copy, cut ,rename, etc was not allowed . Even trying to delete through the normal command line would not work . It seems that once windows had been involved there was no way to get rid of it. But using Safe mode  with command prompt as the first view sorted it .
 its ok now  :)
