Problems connecting DSi to internet
« on: December 20, 2009, 07:42:20 PM »

Hello

On another forum that I frequent, I always find it irritating (for no good reason) when new people start their first post by saying "I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place", but...

I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place  :-[

My son has a DSi and I've followed the instructions to connect it to the internet using the wireless router whatsit thingy box I have at home (which all works fine wirelessly with my laptop). It finds the right device, but then when I enter the WEP security key as required and test the connection it just keeps saying that it's unable to connect to the access point, giving an Error code: 051199-1 (which from what I can make out just means that it can't make the connection).

Any ideas? (in layman's terms please!).

Welcome to the forum Holly. :)

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the DSi, but some things come to mind:

1. Are you sure that the wireless point uses WEP security, and not WPA?

2. The security key will be case sensitive, so make sure that the DS isn't in Caps Lock state.

3. If the security key includes non-alphanumeric characters, is it possible that the DS is in USA keyboard mode, and therefore not putting out the characters you think it is?

I'm probably talking nonsense, and someone more competent should be along soon.

Thank you for the welcome  :)

1. Well the box has both WEP and WPA printed on it, and the security key is the same for both. The DSi only has the option for WEP. I don't know any more than that. I just tried going into the internet settings on my laptop to see if I could get any clue from how that was set up, but I didn't really get anywhere!

2. I'm using the appropriate case.

3. Only has alphanumeric characters in it.

It could be the following which isn't particularly well publicised by Nintendo:

If your router is using WEP security you need to use slots 1-3 on the DSi.

If it's WPA security it's slots 4-6.

To adjust go to:

Connection Settings
Advanced Setup
Connection 4, 5 or 6
Search For an Access Point and select the appropriate SSID then enter your settings

Be aware that older games are not compatible with anything other than WEP.

Thanks orainsear. Unfortunately that didn't work either though, same thing, it finds the device, but won't connect with it.

Going through the other options on there which I just left as default:

Auto-Obtain IP Address: Yes
Auto-Obtain DNS: Yes
Proxy Settings: No
MTU value: 1400

Anything there I should be fiddling with?

no, nothing there to play with. In order to get it connected, you may have to ensure your router is set for WEP security and not WPA...if doing this works for the DSi, the bugbear is that you'll need to alter the network settings on all computers connected to the router :(

Similar issues with M-I-L's huwei router, sent to her by TT....nothing would connect to it if the router was set on WPA, so had to use WEP on all wifi connections :(

I'm a bit nervous about messing with it all because I don't really know what I'm doing and I've had problems in the past, and everything works at the moment (apart from the DSi obviously!). I'll have a look at it in the new year.

Ah well, thanks anyway!

It may well be the router set up isn't at the moment compatible with the DSi.

Have a good Xmas, and when you feel ready I'm sure we can help you to try some more things to get connected.

Great, thanks.

Most technology things are fairly user-friendly these days for joe public, but internet connection, especially of the wireless variety, hasn't quite got there yet!

Merry christmas to you too  :)

Did you manage to sort the problem out in the end?

I have the same problems with my nephews DSi when he is here.

Have done all the above but still no joy. Recently found a website where you can get a PS3 for free, took me about 1.5 to 2 hours to get it without spending any of my own money but managed it and took delivery of it yesterday so he can use that when he comes over now!

Cant post a link to the site on here or i will get slapped for spamming lol but if anyone wants a link im happy to send them one?

would also still like to know how to sort the DSi out tho too, its seriously bugging me!!

No, not sorted, I haven't really done anything else about it to be honest. I'll probably get someone round who's a bit more tech savvy than me at some point and ask them to have a play around with it. He has other means of accessing the internet at home, so it's not crucial, but it's just nice to get all one's gadgets working!
