Best file compression software
« on: December 09, 2009, 06:12:35 PM »

What is the best file compression software currently available in the market for Windows OS? I know Win rar is one of the best but it is not free and €29.95 seems a bit high. I have heard of 7 zip. How good is that in terms of compatibility with other archives? Any other suggestions? :-\

I use 7 zip for decompression and it does that job well. Don't have need of it to compress. I use Winzip command line app in my back up batch files but I don't think there is a command line version of 7 zip. Winzip is shareware and it requires a licence eventually. the same is true of Winrar but the evaluation period is longer and it's slightly cheaper if you want to be legal. They all seem to perform adequately.

7 zip can also be used to compress isn't it? (for 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR)

and it is FREE.

I use 'Just Zip It '   ....     it's simple, tiny, exceedingly fast,  and it's free
