Windows 7 backup and restore
« on: December 09, 2009, 01:21:01 PM »

What is this backup and restore feature in Win 7? Every now and then I am reminded to backup my system. There was no such reminder for Win XP. (I jumped straight from Win XP to Win 7).

Is it something that the windows uses for system restore? If so why am I reminded to backup my data whereas WinXP did that automatically. I am currently backing up the data on a DVD. Is this feature just an annoyance or is it vital? Can this be safely turned off?  :-\

No, not system restore.

XP did not have a built-in backup prog. except in the Pro version..........Vista has a rudimentary one........and 7 has what is claimed to be a good one.

Used for backing up data or system files.

I'm not certain but I think Vista only has this facility in the Ultimate and pro versions.

I have XP Pro but it never reminded me for any back up (automatically like it does in Win 7). I understand backing up my data and Windows need not remind me for it. This goes for any OS. What about system files? If I try to do a system restore (like in Win XP) won't the system files be restored (through windows in-built features rather than me restoring it every now and then). Hope I am able to explain my point. :)

Actually XP all versions does  have a backup program.
But it's only accessible from the disc if you not only knew where to look but also what it was called.
(No it was not called windows backup)

All Vista versions (excepts Home Basic I believe) included the Backup & Restore center.

I use the one in Windows 7 and used the version in Windows Vista and have to say that Windows 7's is far more reliable (and faster).

What I am trying to understand is how the "backup and restore" is different from XPs "system restore". If I switch off the "backup and restore" reminders on Win7, should I still be able to do a system restore if required?

"Backup or/and Restore", and "System Restore" are different programs so it should not make any difference if one or the other is disabled.
