Error playing videos on Windows 7 64 bit.
« on: December 03, 2009, 08:29:26 PM »

I recently purchased a Dell laptop (Studio 1557) with Windows 7 professional (64 bit). It came pre loaded with WMP and I guess thats being used as default video player. Every time I play a video (youtube, IMDB, 20th century fox etc) it runs fine on the webpage (small screen). When I try to maximise it to full screen, the computer freezes and becomes unresponsive. I have to force a re start. I have not installed any new program yet (other than factory installed).

The specs :

CPU - Intel i7-720QM(1.6GHz) Mobile CPU
GPU - 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HP 4570
RAM - 4GB / 500 GB HDD

Any idea what could be wrong? Anyone else facing this issue?  ???

You may need a BIOS Update...

Click Here to Go to the Dell Site...

Expand the BIOS section and download the BIOS update, full instructions are given, but its a simple file download and run ;)

Also check the Video drivers are the latest available, check the version by:-

Start > Type "device manager" and Enter > Collapse "Display Adapters" > ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series > Drivers Tab

You should have version 8.6....

If not use the link I have above and then expand the video section...

If that is inconclusive then check Windows Update and if not then try contacting Dell regarding the issue...

Thanks for the reply Jid.

1. I downloaded the BIOS update but it seems I already have the latest version. Message: "the current system bios is the same version (or newer) than the version you are trying to flash, so the BIOS will not be changed"

2. The display adapter driver version is 8.634.0.0. Seems to be the right one or should it be 8.653.0.0?

The chances are that you need to install/update your "Codec's"

Try the K-lite pack as that seems to resolve most codec problems.

I don't think that Oldfogy's link has come out properly.

The K-Lite codec pack link on that site is at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

I believe that the sites you have listed actually use Adobe Flash as the medium to play the videos.  You may be running an older version of Flash player so I'd suggest upgrading that to start with.

Other thoughts - there may be an issue with IE8 64 bit if you are using it - I don't think that there is a 64 bit version of flash as of yet.  You could try installing another browser, e.g. Firefox (32 bit) and install the 32 bit flash plugin for it.

Edited to add missing hyperlink

Thanks orainsear, and quite correct, I gave the link to the main page, basically so that it could also be seen that other codec packs are also available.
The K-lite pack was/is listed on the left-hand-side.

I updated flash and installed the K lite codec pack. The problem seems to have gone away for now. BIG thanks to all of you as I was getting worried if there was something wrong with the computer (hardware). :)
