Thanks for that b4dger. The MDC certainly had a vast amount of information and options.

I am using mine in a fully bridged mode as an ADSL modem and therefore the firmware has not been interfered with by BT.   >:D

I have found this detailed breakdown of stats page, which is useful if you want to use MRTG to graph the results:  http://192.168.1.254//xslt?PAGE=J45

I am not sure if it will work with your firmware, but it is worth trying it out.

Thanks for that hint Mick, but unfortunately I get 'Page not found' with the latest firmware. :(

It's a pity BT locked it down so much.  :(

I suppose you can always try to JTAG the circuit board  - with the danger of turning it into a brick!  Worth googling in case someone from 2WIRE in the US has leaked how to do it.

1.  I've begun to study the logs it records on the V 6 firmware which are quite extensive. Amongst many other things you can see when it's trying to upgrade its firmware.

2.  Has anybody yet got a full description of the DSL Diagnostics data ?
E.g. What are impulse noise comp tones and why are they always zero on this lousy line where bit swopping must surely be used heavily?
What is excessive inpulse noise ?
What is impulse noise protection ?

What are the two "state" figures e.g. 108/46 when there is a CRC mismatch reported or 236/104 on a good connection?
What are the INC tones and why are they always zero as well ?

I can provide full screen dumps if anyone needs them.

Kind regards,
Walter

Walter,

I asked about the impulse noise protection angle on the BT Business Broadband forum some time ago - and nobody has responded, so this seems to be a bit of a mystery.  Mine varies a little from time to time - at the moment its 1.10.

On mine (at present) INC tones are 0 down and 'OK' up.

Hmm over here it is:
Code: [Select]
Impulse noise protection: 0.55
From what I recall (I'm sure there's a previous thread of mine on this) the "Excessive Impulse Noise" starts increasing when the ADSL filter(s) on your home line start failing.  It's sort of an early detection system.  When the ADSL line filter is about to be fried the modem will report a noise figure and also change from OK to "Suspicious - Impulse noise detected".

The Impulse Noise Compensation Tones is a count of how many tones are affected by dynamic noise on the line and this leads to bit swapping.  For the bravest amongst you I recommend this article I found on the Internet that explains more than what most of us would want to know about Impulse Noise Compensation.

The Impulse Noise Compensation mechanism is the electronic (dynamic) filter that these modems have to actively (as opposed to passively like e.g. an ADSL line filter) reduce noise.

Thanks for that link, which is definitely in the 'ice-pack-on-the-head' category. I'm going to try and digest it, because it looks as though this could be useful additional diagnostic information when a connection is giving trouble.

This may be a bit of a late response ...

Just an idea which may fix the 404 error, if you are still running this router:

Use the web developer addon for firefox and click Disable->disable meta redirects (on the webdev toolbar).  Then try again http://192.168.1.254//xslt?PAGE=J45 in case it still works with this firmware.

@ Eric,

Re your Wiki article, you'll see a later firmware version is mentioned here:-

http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,10405.msg207049.html#msg207049

Also I had a problem with an AAISP service as they had already set up their initialisation systems to work on IPv6 but, although apparently capable, the modem was not yet compatible.
(This might have changed though with the new firmware release.)

Kind regards,
Walter

Thanks Walter, that's not actually a wiki article, it's a copy of a forum post I made some time ago. But there's certainly scope for a new wiki article on the subject, if anyone feels like writing it (hint hint ;D )

@Eric,

I'll have a go, perhaps with help from Asbokid, but it won't be immediately.

Kind regards,
Walter
