Thanks TD - responded to your PM with the results.
Now Im really puzzled at whats going on... because even datastream came back null.
I cant see anything that is going to be at an exchange level and affect your adsl in the way they claim.

Maybe they know something we dont..   keep us updated.

@ unkyUb....

@ kitz...thank you for the PM, have replied.

Will keep digging around locally........as mentioned in my PM, both the phone help desk and the on-line help pages are keeping very quiet and offering no explanations..and direct questions are met with a fob-off.   >:(

Will post if anything turns up.

If I may crave your indulgence, I awaken this thread to give a short update.

To save you reading the whole thing again, it centres round an email received from my ISP, Virgin Media National.
That mail stated "We wanted to let you know about some quick work we’re doing on the Virgin Broadband service in your area soon" and that that work would take place sometime in the period 3rd. to 30th. November.
That period ends today.

My original question was to the effect " what do you think Virgin may be about to do"..............and this caused a little muttering and head shaking as it was evident after research that they were about to do nothing "in my area"...........if that meant my local exchange.

Well, they certainly did nothing in the exchange, my routerstats and connection speeds are exactly as before.

The only discernable difference is that my POP3 mails, whilst still being delivered to my Virgin e-addy, are no longer being delivered through a Virgin.net system but are being routed through the GMail system.

If that is the only difference made, then it is hardly the result of work having been effected "in my area"...............so that part appears to nothing more than hype and hyperbole on the part of Virgin.

Thank you for all the comments made in the thread by the several Kitizens who contributed, the matter seems to be resolved.  :)..........but in an unresolved sort of way  :(

Will forget the issue unless something untoward crops up.

Hmm.. changing the email routing is nothing to do with the broadband service, but maybe I'm just being pedantic. As you say, there doesn't seem to be much you can do other than to forget it. Maybe they're running late, and it's all going to explode tomorrow. :)

Hi TD,

I suspect that "Your Area" is not linked to a specific exchange if you are on their own infrastructure as shown in the picture below (as opposed to Virgin over BT Wholesale's).

I suspect the Hornet's Nest will be how much "supervision" Google can apply to your e-mail traffic which certainly isn't obvious to me at present.
This link describes Google's arrangements for their mail but how does this inter-act with Virgin's terms and conditions ?

http://mail.google.com/mail/help/privacy.html

Kind regards,
Walter

I too now suspect it was to do with the mail.   Although what the your area was all about Ive no idea.   Mail hardly impacts on the physical broadband connection.
Kinda makes them sound good like they are doing something specific to your area which is going to make your connection better
