Satellite speeds and capacity
« on: October 24, 2009, 08:35:31 PM »

Gentlefolk,

Do we have an appropriate guru who could tell me about the expected throughput speeds and capacity of a satellite system?

There has been a recent suggestion that "at speeds of up to 10Mb to around 150,000 homes in the United Kingdom" is a possibility.
Am I correct in thinking that, with a contention ratio of say 50 : 1 a bandwidth of 30,000 Mbps is required?
It would also be interesting to know what upload capacity is available.

Kind regards,
Walter

There's a new satellite going into orbit next year from Eutelsat and the offering is going to be known as Tooway.

According to the info, the total throughput is 70 Gbps, with up to 10 Mbps down and 1Mbps up, however this will depend on the end user tariff (3.6 Mbps down and 384 kbps up for home users apparently).

Edited to add home user speeds.
