Windows 7 - My Views
« on: October 24, 2009, 11:25:46 AM »

Well, I have got to hand it to Microsoft, they've done themselves proud  :)  :clap2:

I have got everything installed without any issues or glitches and every program I have thrown at it works!!

Specs of my machine aren't that recent, but it works!!:-
Pentium 4 3.06Ghz 1MB Cache (don't know anymore!)
2GB Ram - 4GB USB running on Readyboost (it works very well!)
200GB HDD
256MB ATI 2400Pro Radeon Graphics (PCI)

With nothing running it uses just 700mb RAM (compared to vista using just over 1gb!)

I now have Firefox, iTunes and Outlook running with just 933mb RAM in use! Impressive!

Did you upgrade or do a fresh install ?

Seems like a number of people who upgraded have run into driver problems.

Fresh install.

No driver issues whatsoever - PC is 3 years old ;)

Had to manually provide the XP driver for the network card (ADMtek AN983B) but then it worked flawlessly.

Running Windows 7 it in a virtual machine environment here..   clean install and touch wood no problems so far.

Actual PC Specs
Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 4x 2.40GHz
3GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT
2x 500GB HDDs
Realtech RTL8169/8110 Gagbit Ethernet

Virtual Machine Environment
Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @  2.40GHz (suspect that its only using one core)
HDD       -     Ive given it 64 GB and theres still 57GB free
1GB RAM - Seems ok with that though admittedly Ive not much installed and is using just 270MB of RAM!!
Display adapter - (emulated) VM Additions s3 Trio 32/64
Network adapter - (emulated) Intel 21140 PCI Fast Ethernet

Its certainly much leaner than Vista.

Its certainly much leaner than Vista.

But does it still block/deny you access to things it thinks you should not be looking at?

My version of Vista for the last few months still remains virtually untouched, but for some reason over the weekend it decided I was not eligible to even open one of my own folders. (access denied, you do not have permission etc etc)
I had to re-ghost it back a couple of months to be able to do what "I want" to do on my PC.

So far so good.  I'm not sure if its because Im on Pro... but I seem to be able to find and do & use stuff that I want.

The only thing I have found so far is the telnet not being installed by default.   I suppose normally this wouldnt bother most users..and its not something that youd normally use everyday...  but it is required for those who wish to telnet into their router to change configs that arent available in the router web interface.   I couldnt imagine it being a problem for most..   but when I did realise, then it was easy enough to put right and I certainly didnt have to fight the system. - Just tick the box.
I seem to be able to access the cmd prompt fairly easily too... its not as obvious as in some earlier versions of windows but the way I found it was simply by typing cmd.exe in the equiv run box and up it fired.

Theres still a lot of exploring for me to do though yet and getting used to the layout

.... and getting used to the layout

Why is that, have they changed it drastically from either XP or Vista.

"Why on earth MS don't try and stick to a universal layout is beyond me"
I think that's the reason why most/some people complain so much about the various OS.

As for the User Account Control, you can now tell it how "harsh" to be

I set it to the third "notch" in the settings - mainly because I don't like the dimming (annoying).

It still pops up for Installs/Unistalls etc but for things like Sharing files and changing printer settings it not longer intervenes!
