Hi All,

My Broadband connection from BT seems to be very slow and the speed test site that i have used states a download speed of 1.4Mb even though the BT Home Hub router says that bandwidth is 7,712. I have checked on 4 seperate speed test sites and the value never goes above 2Mb.

I have tried to connect to the speedtester.bt.com site but all i get is a page connection error - ie it cant find the page

Some stats from my home hub (i restarted it cause I changed the filters) any advice would be most welcome.

Hi cstanley and welcome.

Couple of questions

1) When did you get the higher speed increase - is it within the past 10 days
2) How long have you been syncing at 7712 for
3) The btw performance tester does get very busy sometimes in the evenings, but if you can retry it - the information it gives would be very helpful in us helping diagnosing your problem.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btwperformancetest.htm  We need to know the IP Profile.
4) Can you perform a speedtest here

Hey Stanley, thats another fine mess  ;D

Ive not been able to get any sense out of the BT speedtester all evening. Keep trying and maybe you will get a result as you need to determine what your IP profile is.

Im beginning to think that any BTTBB customer that synchs at anything over 2 meg is automatically choked ;)

*edit*
Just noticed your uptime is quite short, dont know if you have been faffing about turning the hub on and off etc, but in my (limited) experience I would suggest you leave the hub turned on permanently now that you seem to have synched at a good speed. What seems to happen is that the exchange will start to "see" your connection as an unstable line if you constantly turn it on and off and consequently may lower the speed you synch at to stabilise what it thinks is a bad line. Im sure Kitz will correct me here if it sounds like im talking out of my blowhole but thats how I understand it?

Thanks for the response

re the sync speed - I am not sure - at least a week since I have been having this issue.

I Moved to BT Broadband from Bulldog 3 months ago - experienced the typical up/down nature while the service got established for the first 10 days and then I started to get some good bandwidth - 6Mb +.

The last few weeks it has been quite flaky - dropping connections etc.

When I try the speedtester site i get the following error in firefox
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at test.speedtester.bt.com:50301.

If I try it in explorer just get page not available - BT said something about it needs a certain version of Java but then could not tell me what it was!

Speedtest results from http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/  this morning and we have a good speed - so maybe i just had a glitch, or maybe it is too busy in the evening

Here are the other results that I have had
Date/Time                     Up                 Down
7th July 2007 07:18:19  382 Kbps        6329 Kbps
7th July 2007 07:05:59  365 Kbps        6347 Kbps
4th July 2007 22:09:59  324 Kbps        1046 Kbps
3rd July 2007 23:28:06  376 Kbps        1544 Kbps
3rd July 2007 22:14:13  380 Kbps        886 Kbps
3rd July 2007 22:12:56  382 Kbps        758 Kbps
Average Speeds:            368 Kbps        2818 Kbps

I will try the speedtest again throughout the day - maybe I am just impatient in the evening!

Will keep trying the BT speedtester site to get the IP profile

If the bandwidth stays at 6329 then i will apologise for wasting your time!

hmmmm..   looking at those records then it looks as if you could have perhaps had what is known as a "bad sync event".

Thats when some event locally (could be bad weather/storms or electrical interference) has caused problems on the line and the DLM at the exchange has had to adjust your speed accordingly.

When this has happened and the "bad event" is over, then your line will once again be able to sync at full speeds.  However it takes a period of 3 to 4 days syncing at the higher stable rate before the DLM process increases your IP profile back up in line with your sync speed.

If the bad sync happened on 3rd of July, then it would be today that your profile increases back up - and therefore thats possibly why things seem ok from this morning?

Just keep an eye on things and see how they are this evening.
I say that because I notice your other speed tests have been taken in the evenings therefore it could perhaps be something else that is causing the problem.

OK, perhaps I was a bit hasty posting here! (either that or BT actually did something)

Have done several speedtests during the course of the last 24 hours - seems to be stablising although have not had chance to do in the evening yet. Will do that tonight

Only thing is that yesterday lunch was a bit slow! will keep monitoring

8th July 2007 06:57:42     364 Kbps    6404 Kbps
7th July 2007 15:20:44     290 Kbps    5273 Kbps

looks fine now, slow downs at peak times could be downt to exchange congestion or BTTTB "managing" your connection. See how it goes.
