It has a different chipset to the V4.

We haven't seen any real technical reports on the performance of the v5, but it seems to me that the change to a Conexant chipset was made for cost reduction reasons. Netgear have postitioned the DG834(G) as their budget option, and the DG834GT as the more expensive and better option.

The v5 uses the Connexant (sp?) chip whereby the v4 uses the Broadcom. In my opinion the v4 is a much better modem and holds the line longer than the v5 as the Connexant  tries to grabb too high a sync speed.

ADSL24 don't recommend it for their LLU service - http://adsl24.co.uk/support/llu/

It's also "sub-optimal" on Be and O2 LLU, though they both provide routers anyway.

Am I correct in thinking that the DG834GT does not have different versions

What is the chipset in the DG834GT ...... Broadcom ? And is that the best chipset ?

Thanks

The DG834GT doesn't have different versions. It uses (and always has used) the Broadcom BCM6348 chipset. It's up there with the best for performance on different types of line. Its at least arguable that newer routers using the later BCM6358, such as the DG834N and the D-Link 2740B, have even better performance, but the difference probably isn't great.

I see Netgear offer a 1.6.01.34 firmware for the DG834G  v5, but it doesn't give any details  of what the improvements or bug fixes are. Does anyone know ?

Hello, pippoletto, and welcome to the forum.

I'm just bumping your post as it seems to have slipped through the net and remains unanswered.
No doubt a tech. expert will be along soon to have a look at it... :)

I'm not aware of any custom firmware for the DG834Gv5, I'm afraid. DGTeam would be the most likely to do this, but they haven't done so, and probably won't. I rather suspect that its design doesn't lend itself to really interesting customisation.
