« on: September 05, 2009, 05:50:58 PM »

Hi
May have already be spotted ?

The BT speedtester has changed format. this bit is of particular interest.

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3773 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.

same as  "Your car can do 50MPG. (acceptable 5mpg to 100mpg "

Updated BT Spreedtest screen
« Reply #1 on: September 05, 2009, 08:44:29 PM »

Hi everybody,

It might just be that the line I'm working on has just been capped at 512 kbps but it could also mean that BT are changing their speed test system. I'm pleased to see both data entry requirements are now on one page.

It seems that BT support Windows software only according to their notes, but I expect that could be an oversight re Linux and Macs etc.

Kind regards,
Walter

I haven't encountered the Service ID before, but if you don't enter anything in that box there is a second screen (as before) where you are asked for your ISP login.

I just entered my BT phone number and left the service ID blank.

@ Kitz,

Herewith the resultant screen picture from the new BT Speedtester for a Zen-provided line which has been capped - BT IPStream Home/Office 500 (Rate Adaptive) (IPH5DM).
I've erased sufficient characters to preserve the anonymity of the end user.

(More information on the effects of capping will be provided in the following thread shortly.)

Are BT suggesting that a throughput that is 1/5 of the sync speed can be deemed acceptable?  Is this some sort of acknowledgement that heavy congestion can exist at peak times?

I don't think that figure of 600kbps is anything to do with synch speed or IP profile, isn't it just an arbitrary (if pathetic) number that BT have deemed to be 'acceptable' for the service, regardless of sync speed?

Perhaps what might be more significant is that you can see from my capped illustration that this page is also to be connected to the BT stand-alone domain tester.

BT then highlight that slower performance after re-connecting could be down to the ISP's infrastructure. This might well be true for the "cheap as chips" brigade, but it's less likely that such a difference would be observed for those struggling with aluminium and other undesirable network "features".

** As currently worded it might suggest that BT are confusing users as my capped line result was most definitely not directly connected to test.speedtester.bt.com. (This comment does not apply to those uncapped users seeing the other new result format.)

Kind regards,
Walter

Edit to add the ** para.

Looking at my own BT speedtest......BT states that if I was getting 400kbps then they would deem that acceptable... >:(

Why don't we say ok then,I find £2.99 a month acceptable for what I am receiving  :P
