Looking For A New Router, Need Some Advice Please.
« on: September 09, 2009, 11:10:36 AM »

Hi, I currently have a Netgear DG834g which I've found out is incompatible with my Play station 3 (lots of other people on the net with same problem), I ordered a Thomson SpeedTouch 585 v7, but have just found out that it doesn't work with DMT tool.

So basically I need a router that works well with ADSL2+ (I'm with Vivaciti on their re-sold Cable & Wireless LLU product), needs to be wireless, need to work wirelessly with the Play Station 3 and needs to work with DMT tool.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil,

I think you'll find there is a version of DMT (V7.35 ?) tool which will work with a 585V7.

Kind regards,
Walter

Edit to put the version No in.

Yes, apparently it works for Stats, but not for SNR tweaking which is what I really want it for.

Thanks anyway.

If you have been tweaking I presume that you currently have a DG834Gv4?

Assuming it's compatible with the PS3 you could get a Netgear DG834GT (plenty of ex Sky ones can be found on an auction site) which is tweakable.

Thanks for the reply orainsear.

I've just Googled 'DG834GT PS3' and it seems every man and his dog are having problems with those and PS3's as well.

Netgear claimed to have fixed the problem in a firmware update, but it didn't work for anyone that I saw in a day of searching for a solution on the net.

Is it a wireless problem that is causing the issues between the Netgear and PS3?

Yes, they have a problem with the encryption side of the wireless on certain Netgear routers and PS3's . Even if you overcome that by disabling the encryption, then the PS3 gives a DNS error. Netgear could fix it with a firmware upgrade and claimed they had, but they obviously haven't as there are still loads of people suffering.

Does this still happen with the PS3 hard wired via an ethernet cable?

As for some other routers you could consider, the  D-link 2640B (wireless g) and  DSL-2740B (wireless n) are both tweakable with DMTtool.

Don't know, my PS3 is in a different room to my Netgear so didn't try with the cable.

Yes, been looking at the D-link 2640B. I've looked at various user reviews and it seems to have good comments. The only regular downside in customer reviews is that it runs very hot, which is a bit worrying. Do you/have you used D-link's, what's your experience?

Thanks for all the help.

Not personally, but I have heard that the 2640b is good, especially with Xbox Live.  If a router does run a little hot you can usually help keep it cooler by standing it on it's end to present as large a surface area to the air as possibe to facilitate heat convection (as long as you are not blocking any vent holes).

There are some users of the 2740b on this forum and I believe that they think it's a good device.

A quick search of the net certainly doesn't bring as many PS3 issues for the D-Link compared to the Netgear, however it may be worthwhile contacting D-Link to confirm that it will work properly with the PS3.

Those that use the Dlinks on here seem pretty pleased with them, but Im not sure how they perform with a PS3.
