Line contention or something more sinister??
« on: August 20, 2009, 11:04:50 AM »

Hi all,

First post on any forum site so apologies if it seems all wrong!

I am with BT at the momoent and have their 20mb service since 6th august.

ever since i have had all kinds of problems with speed, have phoned the support people and they have not told me i will be on 10 days settling in time in fact i have had engineers round to see the connetion so i assume it isnt that.

Anyway, the opoint at hand:

during the evenings i am getting speeds near enough 500kbps with a line profile of 16000!!

I tested this morning and yesterday morning at near 8 ish and got 15.5Mbps but as it goes every evening i get top speed of 1.5 usually lower!

have the v2 homehub and stats are as follows:

ADSL line status
Connection information
Line state Connected
Connection time 1 day, 7:48:16
Downstream 18,815 Kbps
Upstream 1,167 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.5
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 3.3 dB / 6.3 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 24.5 dB / 13.7 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.3 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local) 0
Loss of Signal (Local) 0
Loss of Power (Local) 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 4294967264
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 5391 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local) 3982

I have looked at the noise margin in the evenings and it may go down to 3.0 but thats it.

not sure what else to look at and was wondering if more knowledgable people such as yourselves have any better ideas? thanks

Hi and welcome.

There appears to be nothing wrong with your actual ADSL connection, so the varying download speed will either be due to congestion/contention or traffic management by the ISP. You can check the status of your local exchange by entering your telephone number here. If the VP capacity is red, that might account for the evening slowdown.

It's not uncommon for BT (the ISP) customers to experience slow downloads at peak times, so it may just be that which you are suffering from. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about that other than scheduling your downloads at off-peak times, or changing ISP of course.

Thanks

Thats what i was hoping! Im looking to move over to Be and was hoping it was just a congetion thing that may well get sorted by the move away from BT. They will let me cancel free of charge so im jumping on that gift horse!!

In your position I would do the same. Good luck!
