Loosing internet but router still synced
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:19:29 AM »

I wonder if someone can shed some light on this irritating problem.

I recently migrated to an LLU provider [3 weeks ago].

Every now and again I seem to get some loss of internet which lasts for a few minutes and then everything returns to normal.

The loss of internet is partial for lack of other words and let me explain why. This morning a few minutes ago [9.45am] I was on the net and suddenly I loose connectivity. I went upstairs to check the router and noted that the green sync light was on [and solid].

I have a voip ATA connected to my router with 2 phone lines. I noted that one of the phones was active and the other was dead ie one phone works ok and has a dial tone and the other not.

I go back to my pc and still no internet connection. I tried to ping the router and that worked fine. I tried to ping an outside site and that also seemed to work. However, still no internet. I log in to the router and check the stats ie uptime and there has been no reboot and the uptime is unbroken.

A few minutes later, internet returns and the voip phone which was offline is now back online and working again.

I have noticed this happening about 2-3 times so far and last time it happened I was on a  different pc.

I have a DG834GT with the DGteam firmware which I purchased recently and did start a thread about the heat that this unit was discharging [since this can cause routers to lockup].

I have provided the abridged stats from my router below not sure if the more detailled ones may be more useful.

The only other piece of info that may be useful [not sure] is that for the first 10-12 days of service interleaving on my service was set to on. I did not notice loss of internet at that time but then again I was not watching that closely. When I checked the interleaving status a few days ago it was now showing as off. My isp informed me that by default interleaving is set to Auto.

I appreciate that this is probably not an easy problem to zero in on but if I had to start compiling a list of what to check, what should I put on that list.

WAN              PPPoA      836972     1002817    0    398    2791       94:37:07
LAN            10M/100M   1051044    874890     0    2916  459         94:38:05

ADSL Link                       Downstream          Upstream
Connection Speed           13692 kbps            925 kbps
Line Attenuation                28.5 db                  17.3 db
Noise Margin                       6.4 db                   2.4 db

Many thanks for any info provided.

Cheers

this can happen to me if my snrm drops too low, no reported loss of sync but unable to actually connect to net :(  May be some intermittent noise getting onto your line causing it.....

Great.............

Couple of questions please:

1. Would this noise be one emanating in my house, on the wire leading to the exchange, at the exchange or possibly all of the above.

2. Would another router likely suffer less or not at all? ST585v6

3. Would turning Interleaving to on help.

4. At the moment my connection is marginally tweaked via DGTeam. If I returned the SNR setting to default, might this help.

Many thanks

Yes that is correct, I did post a thread about this after I first got connected to LLU but as you can see from the thread below, my upstream snrm does not seem to be too far away from those of others

Are there lots of (CRC) errors on the line?

The line can appear to stutter and loose connectivity if lost packets are being lost and the router has to request them.

Many thanks for your reply kitz.

Well the router rebooted yesterday before I could copy the stats. It also resynced lower at just over 13,000 kbps [vs 13,692kbps] .

Here are the stats since last reboot ie 1 days from routerstats.

Total Up Time (From SF count):

1 days, 00:28:44

CRC:  24599
LOS:  1
LOF:  9
ES :  7194

Bytes Transferred (ppp0):
  Tx: 28371232 (27.0 MiB)
  Rx: 239158414 (228.0 MiB)

Downstream
Noise Margin:     7.8   dB
Connection Rate:  13066  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 28.5  dB
Power:            19.7  dBm
Max Rate:         14364  Kbps

SF:               5178713
SF Errors:        1537
Reed Solomon:     535996804
RS Corrected:     13160961
RS Un-Corrected:  50989
HEC:              1171
Errored Seconds:  7194
Severe ES:        266
Interleave Depth: 64  <-- I was pretty sure that this was at 32 yesterday....

Upstream
Noise Margin:     2.3  dB
Connection Rate:  925   Kbps
Line Attenuation: 17.3  dB
Power:            12.4  dBm
Max Rate:         930  Kbps

SF:               5225088
SF Errors:        2478
Reed Solomon:     0
RS Corrected:     0
RS Un-Corrected:  0
HEC:              22191
Errored Seconds:  1694
Severe ES:        42
Interleave Depth: 1

Interleave: OFF

I did tweak the connection in the DGTeam  firmware and perhaps I went too far [have the SNR tweak now back at 75%]. Not that the SNRM level fell to silly levels.

Let me know what you think. My router is not connected to the master socket but is on a wired-in extension.

Cheers

A lot of errors even though you've not transferred much data.

Any chance you could connect into the test socket for a while rather than into your extension?

Have you tried a different microfilter?

Hi
your up time from SF counts is that the WAN or LAN . The reason I am asking is that
on my router the CRCs  and ES  are only reset after a reboot . so if your uptime displayed is WAN uptime the errors do not relate to the shown uptime but to the uptime since last reboot .(6 days ??)

Difficult unfortunately.

No, but I will do.

Not sure, sorry. Only started using routerstats very recently.

[EDIT:] Think you are right jeffbb in that the CRC errors were from the LAN uptime. I say this because I have just rebooted the router and this is what it has

Total Up Time (From SF count):
0 days, 00:02:07

CRC:  24767
LOS:  1
LOF:  9
ES :  7248

These are slight increases to values posted above. So it looks like the above figs are for an uptime of 155:13:59 or 6 days 11hrs 13mins 59secs [which I see in the DG834GT web interface]. Is this error count more within normal tolerance now?

Should I maybe consider that Interleaving be turned on....
