Putting the IDE plug in the wrong way, the PSU should fold back to zero volts and come back up when the fault is removed, if not the mains power should be removed for a few mins.
Any IDE HD should work, it does not mater what make it is.
A Linux 'Live CD' can be used to access data on your HD.
