Demon problems
« on: August 06, 2009, 10:51:07 AM »

Hi guys,

I have a friend who is with Demon ADSL ::) He has a 53.5dB line and is out in the sticks a fair bit.

He is on Demon ADSL2+ (C & W LLU) which gives him terrible congestion.

However, his stats don't look very nice for his line, 2000kbps less than they should be :o

ADSL Link                    Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed    2435 kbps   903 kbps
Line Attenuation    53.5 db           30.0 db
Noise Margin            11.4 db           5.9 db

That was taken around 19:37. Router is a Netgear Rangemax DG834PN. Wondering if I can manually DMT the line to give him some extra speed, but I am not sure about the 11.4dB noise margin, not much spare to push it down.

He hasn't yet removed the ring wire which I think would help him with the attenuation and he also has some old extension wiring he needs to disconnect. He has no NTE5 and is connected to the master socket.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

I think before he does anything else he needs to tidy up his wiring. Disconnecting the ring wire is OK, and may be all that needs to be done. Ideally the master socket should be replaced with an NTE5 and a filtered faceplate, but replacing the master socket is a BT job. The subject is discussed at the end of this page.

Yeh wiring is priority, he has just moved into the house and extensions everywhere, he doesn't use them so is disconnecting them!!

He could try forcing ADSL2 modulation (after all wiring is sorted) as this can sometimes provide an improvement on longer lines.  Not sure if it's possible with standard DG834PN firmware but I'm sure that DGTeam can do it.

As others have said sort the wiring out first.

From my experience sorting the ringwire will improve the SNR (and so the sync) but doesn't change attenuation very much if at all. Please post the stats after the ringwire has been removed...

Sounds like they have a few options anyway having an LLU'd exchange!  ;D

Yes he is going to disconnect all the extensions and the ring wire so we will see and will update you.

As for the exchange, yep tons of options:-

Be/O2
Sky
Tiscali
Talk Talk
Orange.

I believe his best bet would be to go with O2 as good support/prices/reliability
