Thanks for that Jeff. It might help others in the same predicament - in fact I've taken the liberty of editing your original post to include the contents of your attached document.

UB: It appears Jeff used the standalone SP2 installer from here.

Oh I see Mr Chris,thanks.
Its just I wait and then install via m/s auto updates.I have not as yet been offered it via this method (no rush). 
I installed sp1 via this method without any problems.

I would wait too - then all the guinea pigs will hopefully have found all the teething troubles before you try it out - lol

Jeff,

I reinstalled my system the other day and used the standalone installer to install SP2.

I got the exact same problem as you.

So I waited for it to arrive on Windows Update and installed it from there - a much smaller 40mb download as well...

I would do as others have suggested and wait for it to arrive in Windows Update - it worked for me

The first time I tried to install WAS via the normal update route .That's when it failed .
Sorry didn't make that clear
