Zero downstream power
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:57:02 PM »

I don't know if I need to be too concerned, but I have a Netgear DG834G v4, and I also run the excellent program Routerstats. In the Summary screen that you get when you select the Telnet button, under Downstream the Power is displayed as 0.0dBm. Should this be a cause for concern or investigation ?

No, it's just a false report by the router. I've seen this reported elsewhere, although I don't remember the details, but it certainly can't be a correct figure.

OK, thanks for that Eric. I just wondered, but at the same time I thought I'd read about someone else having that 'issue'. Of course when you want to find some reference like that it's not always easy.

Hi
Re toulouse :"under Downstream the Power is displayed as 0.0dBm"

I also use  Netgear DG834G v4  and  Rs reports the expected power         Power:            19.8  dBm

regards Jeff

Thanks jeffbb,

That's interesting, isn't it.

I seem to recall reading about this issue 'somewhere', probably on this site. What sticks in my mind is something to do with non compatibility with some manufacturers equipment which might be installed in the local exchange, but I could be wildly wrong about this.

I think that's quite probable.

I havent searched, but I seem to recall seeing this in the past too.  I could be wrong, but iirc it was something to do with a particular firmware version simply not reporting it...  however I cant recall it was on the Netgear v4?

It shouldnt have anything to do with compatibility between the dslam and router chipsets or it would be much more prevalent, as a lot of routers use the broadcom chipset.

Hi
The only time I know about is when using a the speedtouch 330 modem . That always reported 0 for both up and down.

I'd have imagined (please do correct me) that a display of 0dB power, alongside a sensible value for attenuation, would seem to suggest the router's just displaying it wrong.  If the router really was failing to establish the actual signal power, owing to incompatiblity with the DSLAM,  it would be unable to calculate the attenuation, would it not?

As I say, please anybody feel free correct me if I'm wrong, I'd be curious to know.

That would be my understanding too. There must be some form of power output. Hence me thinking its a firmware issue.
