DG834GT Attached Device Name Unknown
« on: June 20, 2009, 10:46:07 AM »

I have 2 annoying problems with a Netgear DG834GT flashed with the latest DGT firmware.
I have run Mandriva Linux for a number of years now so I am quite familiar with it.

I am able to set up a connection with said router, both wired and wireless. The problem is when I go to Attached Devices in the web interface my devices show up as unknown. All except for a Windows Machine and my main PC which is running Linux. I have set the other machines on the network, Linux OSes, the same as the main pc. Any ideas please?

Also I am unable to ping the windows machine using it's name, yet I can ping the main pc using it's name. Name resolution somewhere I guess. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

I have googled, searched Mandriva forums all to no avail.

I use a router with the DGTeam firmware, and all the devices on my network are shown as unknown. To be honest, I've never thought about it and don't have any idea where the router is supposed to collect the name from.

The other issue is easy enough to handle manually, so long as you have DHCP set up in the router so that each connected device is always allocated the same IP address (or you use fixed IP addresses). You can edit /etc/hosts and add entries for each connected device. I just tried this by adding an entry for my Iomega NAS device like this:

192.168.1.25 iomega

after which 'ping iomega' works as it should.

Thank you Roseway.
I beat you to it and decided to set up all the machines with static addresses. It's easy on a small network such as mine, but it must be pain with a few pc's on it.
The only problem I have now is setting up the hosts/ip addresses on the windows machine. I'm blowed if I know where to do that.  Is there anybody still running windows that might be able to help me please?

The unknown device connected to my DG834GT is my internet gateway, i.e. the node in my ISP's network that I'm connected to.
You can probably work that out by checking it's IP address against yours.  ;)

All the unknown devices on mine are accounted for on the lan. It's just the names that come up as unknown. It must be because I'm running a slightly superior operating system

It's all sorted now. I'll use the Netgear as a bookend and use the O2 modem instead. ;D

Until I find a better solution I have now been round all 6 machines and edited the hosts files, and reserved the addresses on the router so there should be no clashes.  :fingers:

Even if it isn't elegant, it's effective. :)

And it works. The only thing I need to be aware of is the weakness of the Windows OS and the hosts file. I think I have it covered. No worries with the Linux machines. ;)

If you are still looking for the answer here, it lies in Linux's default configuration, which is to NOT send the hostname as part of the DHCP request.

If you are using debian or other dchp3 style clients, edit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and add a line

send host-name "linuxbox";

or whatever.

If you are not using dhclient then you will have to hiunt around for the equivalent command..

Thanks for that tnp, I was wondering where the relevant config was.
