Problems downloading Adobe Reader 9
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:52:13 PM »

I recently had some pdf files sent to me and they would not open.  I realised that I had an l had an old version of Adobe reader so I have tried to download version 9. But it gets to about 90% then seems to freeze and says installation pending. I have left it for over and hour and it gets no further. OK so tried again, same thing ahppened.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please.  I'm using XP Prof SP3.

Unless you particularly want Adobe Reader, I think the best suggestion may be to forget it......it is a resource hog, and as you have discovered it is a pain to download and install.

IMHO, better to go to http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ and download and install Foxit Reader..........it does exactly the same job, is a fraction of the size, is very light on resources and installs without a murmur. Oh, and it's free..

All round better programme....give it a go and you will not look back... :)

If Adobe Reader is a must for you, do not try to download/install from Adobe........that gives the problems you have encountered, Adobe is notorious for this.
Better to go to a clean dowload site such as http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/..............save the installer file to your desktop, then run it and install when "offline" .

But Foxit is a better prog.

Thanks very much for that Tuftedduck, that downloaded in a few seconds and seems to work OK.
Now of course there are a couple of small files that Adobe will not let me delete even in Add & Remove.... :hmm:

Possibly there is a residual fragment of the installation prog still active.............have a look in taskmanager to see if there is an Adobe Reader service running...if so stop that service then it should delete ok.

OK had a look in task manager and there were some bits still running. Stopped and now there are just two small files Identity-H and Identity-V left  7 and 2 KB respectively, if I try to delete I get Access denied... But at those sizes I think I can forget them.

You may well find that these two small files will have disappeared after your next reboot, or if still there after reboot...they will then delete ok.

Not unusual for Adobe products to leave bits and pieces all over the place.

Can you tell us where these two files are located ?

Been googling around, and it seems that this is a very common problem.

These files are in same way connected to encryption of fonts........just what I cannot understand.

The solution is to go to http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/, download, save and then install "unlocker" and then run it over these files....that will get rid of them.

I get to them in program files - Adode - Reader9.0 - Resource - CMap  where they are Identity-H and Identity-V,

Unlocker has removed them.
Thanks again what would us average PC users do without the expertise on here....... :clap2:
