Hi, I'm new here and have been having a few little problems with my PC that I hope somwone will be able to advise on. It's a 5 year old pentium 4/2.6 with loads of memory, unknown brand but could be from Novatech here in the UK as I have bought a few from them in the past I would buy new but I would then spend ages getting all the software back up and running and some I don't know where the source discs are!

1 Sometimes on startup it doesn't find the keyboard and I have to grovel about under the desk unplugging and replugging the USB connector. It's then OK 'til next time.

2 Both CDrom and DVD rom don't work even though the troubleshooter says they are working correctly which they aren't.

Can anyone suggest what I need to do?

Hello, and welcome to the Kitz forums.

I think  the first thing to try is to update the drivers for the keyboard and the two drives

Do you have a PS/2 port available for the keyboard?
Have you tried a different USB port?
Is the keyboard useable when in the BIOS screens.

I assume you are using XP which should automatically recognise the CD/DVD drives.
Any error shown in Device Manager for the drives?
Are these two separate drives and are they sharing the same cable?
Have you checked the ribbon cable is still serviceable and connected correctly/firmly?

Uninstall the drives in Device Manager, reboot and let Windows install them again.

I've tried to reload the keyboard driver, no luck and have disconnected the DVD drive, success! Well at least the CD rom works now.

I'll leave it at that for the moment.
