A numpty query re BtW speed tester
« on: May 28, 2009, 06:26:21 PM »

I am with PN. If I want to do a direct test, what follows after speedtest@speedtest_, that is what do I put in place of "domain"? :-[ :)

If you mean the additional verification then it will be

username@plusdsl.net

where username = your plusnet username.

To clarify here's the bit from the kitz site

BT Wholesale Speed Test Domain

BTw offer a Speedtest that will bypass your ISP and test your line direct with BT's servers.
~ Please note this test only works if you are on IPStream and it does not work with DataStream products or LLU ISPs

To access the service you will need to disconnect from your ISP* and log in to BT by using the following connection details::-

    USER: speedtest@speedtest_domain
    PASS: testing

The above information should be put into your router login details or if you have a modem you should change the dialup username. Its wise to make a note of your ISP login before changing it.

Once successfully logged in, you will can access the Speed Tester server by typing http://217.32.105.42 in your browser.

BTW the questions arose because a test last evening with the standard connection via ISPwas inconclusive as only upload data recorded, and I was told to ho to test2.

ahhh.. sorry the confusion is because there are in effect 2 tests that can be performed.

The first one is the BTw performance tester (which gives you your IP profile) and for that you use username@plusdsl.net into the website page where asked.

If that test is below par,  you are offered to bypass the ISP network and do a test on the BTw speedtest domain...
For this you have to physically change the login in your router to:

user: - speedtest@speedtest_domain
password:- (this can be left blank but since some routers wont accept a blank field so you can put in anything such as test or even keep your ISP passy).

Unfortunately from time to time the BTw performance & speed testers do seem to go through bad spells.  They tend to get very busy particularly in the evenings and its not unusual to have problems accessing it :(

Theres only 2 servers (St Albans & Manchester) that cope with a huge amount of traffic - more so since people now use them to access their IPprofile data.  IIRC I did also hear a rumour that there was only the Manchester server that was now offering the stage 2 test, but since Im not on IPStream I cant check this out any more :/

Thanks for info :) but this numpty has some more questions .

So amend router log in to speedtest@speedtest_username@plusdsl.net; temporary password; apply.

Then go to http://217.32.105.42. Have I got all the above right. as it did not connect and IE came up with fault message, that I might not be connected to internet?

After inputting phone number, what is additional verification in place of my usual username@plusdsl.net?

>> So amend router log in to speedtest@speedtest_username@plusdsl.net;

Just speedtest@speedtest_domain

You can now only access that test after invited by the first stage (performance test).

------------------

For the BTw performance test you dont need to change anything in your router.

You simply go to http://test.speedtester.bt.com

It will then ask for your phone no..  then it will ask you for the validation login.

For that you need to put in "username@plusdsl.net" where it asks
