Long standing speed/noise issue. Advice?
« on: May 24, 2007, 05:59:06 PM »

Hi, I have been having an ongoing problem with my BB for some time now and would be interested to hear any advice. Briefly (very) I moved to a new house 6 months ago. The previous occupier was a BT BB customer. We took over the same number and also went with BT for option 3. It took 3 months just to get the broadband activated and even then it got turned off  due to administration issues. Then there was a fault at the exchange.
For about a month and a half I had a nice stable IP profile of 4.5 meg. Then there was another fault at the exchange. Leading up to the discovery of this fault I endured weeks of two hour long calls to the hopeless BT "help"desk during which I was constantly asked to reset the router, disconnect, plug into the test socket etc etc. After the fault was eventually traced to the exchange I had a new problem.
I would synch at about 5300kps, then at peak time keep dropping to the same 3776 kps speed all the time. After some reading up I think it is to do with my noise margin settings getting screwed up because i am now identified as "an unstable" line (BTw's words) My problem has now been raised to BTretails high level faults. Spoke to a helpful guy today, and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing he reports that BTw have RAISED my noise margin. This will take 24 hours to take effect, so I have been asked to force a re-synch tomorrow and they will call back on Monday to see if I have stayed connected at my higher synch.
From what I have read on a similar thread here, shouldnt wholesale be lowering my margin? I have had 6 months of this hassle and getting pretty fed up with it now. I would appreciate any advice that you guys can offer!
cheers- Chris

At a guess I would say that the helpful guy simply made a verbal typo. You already seem to be at the maximum target noise margin of 15 dB, so they can't raise it even further. See what happens tomorrow.

I too think the guy meant that BTw have raised your Target SNR (which is related to, but not the same as SNR Margin).  Raising your Target SNR should help stabilise the line, and stop the variation in sync speed that occurs over the day/evening.

Target SNR changes arent always made overnight and can be processed during the day, so it may well have already occured.  Although your current SNR Margin is showing as 15.5dB, then this isnt necessarily conclusive that your existing target SNR is 15dB.
Your router looks like it could have been up for a while and therefore the figure showing now could be due to the days variation.

To find out for sure, youd need to do a resync and then immediately check your SNR Margin.

To be honest, if you previously had an IP profile 0f 4500 with an attenuation of 50 dB then you were doing extremely well. What you're getting now is fairly typical of what would be expected on your line. If you haven't already done it, then it would be worth making sure that your internal wiring and connections are as good as they can be. There are some tips at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm

If those stats were taken immediately after the resync - then it looks like your Target SNR is 12dB.

SNR Margin is normally best during the earlier part of the day, so it may be worthwhile trying a reboot to see if you can connect at a slightly higher speed.

Have you done all the usual stuff for testing such as checking stats from the test socket?
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm

Which router are you using btw?  Do you have another (or one that you can borrow for a few mins) to test with too, just to make sure.  If you have a HH some of them are not the best router if you have a longish line (which as 50dB it would appear you do). :/

Just got in from work( skived off early just to synch up before rush our LOL) and here are the stats as soon as logged on. This is at 3pm, just over 24 hours after  BT reckon theyve made some changes. hopefully it will stay connected so keep all your bits crossed ;)

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   26.5 / 50.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   18.0 / 12.0

EDIT- speed test, Rubbish profile brought on by the last poor synch. Lowest ever :(

Thanks again for the assistance. I have had just over 3 days of solid connection @4640kps :) Strangely though, my IP profile went from 2500 to 3000 after about a day and a half of being connected. I was expecting to come in today after the solid three days and see a 4000 prifile  ??? ??? Any ideas why the profile hasnt moved up tp 4000?

A connection speed of 4640 should certainly give you an IP profile of 4000, but sometimes it takes slightly more than 3 days. If it's still at 3000 after another day then your profile may have stuck and you will need to ask your ISP to get it unstuck.

Other than that, your figures look good.

Cheers, true to his word, the guy from BT high level complaints did indeed phone back this evening to check how things are going and he is going to look into why the bras hasnt gone up (shame it has to go to high level to get anything done at BT retail but hey ho...)- results here
