Slow & intermittant connection
« on: May 22, 2007, 09:04:21 PM »

Hi,

I am useing the Homehub on BT's option 3 "up to 8mb" service.

When I do a speedtest it comes back anything between 512k & 1.5mb max  >:(

I have posted my stats below and was wondering if someone could advise why such slow speeds?

Also do you think it's worth purchasing a better router? Will that improve the speed at all?

Thanks very much for any advice!  :)

EDIT - Forgot to mention I connect via ethernet cable to the Homehub! Not wireless..

Hi and welcome to the forum

>> Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 1.5 / 5.0

Okay - you live very near the exchange and should be getting the best sync speeds.

>> Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 7,232

Youre syncing at 7232, max is 8128 or a theoretical 7616 on an Interleaved line.  You have plenty of spare SNR Margin (15.5dB) so reboot your router now to see if it reconnects at a bit better rate.

I suspect your line may have interleaving applied due to the fact that you have some recorded FEC errors.
Im not too happy about the fact you are showing some Loss of Signal and errored seconds, I wouldnt expect that based on your line stats.

With regard to the reported slow speeds we need to check your IP profile is ok, and eliminate the possibility of a low bRAS profile due to a stint of errors and disconnections that may have occured at the times of Loss of Signal.

So can you please do the following and report back.

- Restart your router and get your new line stats
- Complete a BTw Performance Test
- Perform a speed test at BBMax.

Hi,

Thanks for replying so quickly  :)

Ok, so I rebooted the Homehub as you suggested and here are my latest stats

Modulation: G.992.1 Annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 7,648

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 18.35 / 127.60

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 7.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 1.5 / 5.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 15.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 87

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

With regard to the BTw Performance Test

IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  7648 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5129 kbps

And finally the BBMax Speedtest

Download Speed: 1285 kbps (160.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 310 kbps (38.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Still not very healthy although it is marginally quicker since the reboot.

We have an "old style" BT junction box instead of the modern BT mastersocket so today have spoken with BT to arrange for an engineer to come out and fit an updated socket. Then I was thinking of fitting one of the ADSL faceplates to eliminate any potential signal loss...

Hopefully that will increase the speed a little more  :-\

Thanks for your time and help so far!

Thats more like I would expect to see.  The fact that there are some FEC errors indicates Interleaving applied, so you are now syncing at max you can.

Still not happy though that you are seeing some FEC errors.

The BTW performance test shows that all is normal right now - the 6000 profile has been picked up from your previous lower syncs and if you can maintain your current connection that should increase in about 3 days time to 6500.

Your IP throughput is good - showing that your line is getting 5129 throughput... and eliminating any speeds slower than that due to your line.

Not happy with the BBMax speedtest - based on the other facts that youve given the finger is now more pointing towards the ISP side of things rather than an actual line fault. :(

Does this by any chance mostly occur during peak times? Are you able to get more decent speeds during the wee small hours or daytime?

If the engineer comes and if you ask nicely [and offer a cuppa and biccies], if he has a spare adsl filtered faceplate with him, he may fit at the same time since it makes no odds to him which he fits ;)

Hi Kitz,

Well to be honest i did notice early this morning that the speed did seem to increase.

Up until about 23:00 the speedtest was showing anything up to 1.5mb down however it did seem quicker a couple of hours later. I was getting 5.3mb down max. It looks like i may have to log on later at night from now on
 :(
Well fingers crossed when the BT engineer has fitted the ADSL socket (good tip thanks) it may just speed the connection up!

Thanks for all the advice so far  :)

Possibly contention at the local exchange if this occurs during peak time hours.  Try checking your exchange

Ok I checked the exchange (Code is WMCRO) & it seems ok..

One thing to point out is my latest stats. Plenty of FEC errors etc...Also my SN margin has reduced slightly

Anyways i'll hold out until BT have turned up to fix the mastersocket.

Bye for now...

With a line attenuation of 5dB, he must practically be next door to the exchange..  Therefore theres no real reason why he should be seeing such low speeds.  His line should be spot on.
Normally you'd ignore FEC errors because they just show that Interleaving is working correctly and "reassembling" the packets.

But on such a short line he really shouldnt be seeing any CRC/HEC and hardly any FEC errors.
However there isnt sufficient errors either to account for such slow speeds either.

One thing that is very odd is that the BTW Performance test is giving speeds of 5129kb though.. so that means that the line can work well.

If that was my line I'd be tempted to install something like DUMeter or Netmeter(free version)... then  go download a file from a good source eg and see what that records.
