Thomson TG585 and BST
« on: April 30, 2009, 03:16:00 PM »

I've just acquired the above router. I've upgraded to v7.4.4.7 firmware and notice that the router doesn't keep the summer time setting, hence router time is currently 1 hour behind BST. My user.ini file appears to have the correct info, viz
[ sntpc.ini ]
config state=enabled

and further down...

[ system.ini ]
settime timezone=+00:00 daylightsaving=enabled

Has anyone else found the same? Is there a fix other than forgetting about keeping real time on the router?

Hi Blacksmith,

I may have the answer for this, leave this with for a couple of hours and I'll post a reply.

Isn't this the same for most routers, you have to manually set it for BST.

If you used a UK time server would that solve it - 195.66.148.150 \ uk.pool.ntp.org

For the record -- not that it helps anyone at all:

I reported this fault (amongst many others in the early TG585v7 firmware) to Thomson just over a year ago, when it first came out. Their CS Tech confirmed that it is a bug and forwarded a report to the developers on 7th April 2008. He was apparently told:

Quote
If all goes well it should be taken care of in the next upgrade.

... from which I am forced to conclude that all did not go well, as the problem is still there (or has been reintroduced, perhaps?) in the 7.4.4.7 firmware.

Hi

Thanks for all the replies. jimbobaggies: sorry, I should have said that I already have the address of Manchester University time server set, viz

[ sntpc.ini ]
add addr=130.88.200.4 version=3
config poll=60 pollpresync=5
config state=enabled

However, I've rechecked the user.ini file on the router and discovered this:

[ system.ini ]
settime timezone=+00:00 daylightsaving=disabled

but my backup file saved several days ago shows daylightsaving=enabled.

Using Telnet and the CLI to set it appears to work until the computer is rebooted when it's once again off, so it must be bugged.

Leo: I'm a Zen user and use Thomson/SpeedTouch kit on ISP advice, and very good it is too for maintaining good sync rates. Hope to hear from you.

Hi Blacksmith,

the ntp servers can be set, however this needs to be done manually in the Thomson Setup on the left side.

Set the server time to ntp0.zen.co.uk and tick summer time. Thomson are trying to fix this bug for the next firmware release.

Kindest Regards,

Now done. Shame really, having to revert to manual daylight savings setting when it's built-in.

Let's hope Thomson repair this in the next firmware release but having used a SpeedTouch before the TG585, I'm not entirely optimistic having had dealings with their (almost non-existent) customer support service in the past.
