Password protect USB / external hard drive

Hi, Can anyone guide me on how to password protect folders on entire external hard drive? I have read about "truecrypt" but has anyone actually used it? Is it any good considering the time it takes to encrypt / decrypt the files / folders? Any other software around? (preferably free) :p

Have not used the program myself, but was reading some good reports of it on another forum earlier tonight.

I've not used Truecrypt either, but it has the reputation at being one of the best free programs at doing what it does.
