@ Kitz,

I wonder if its worth it, but there does seem to be a correlation between serial numbers and V numbers at least on Netgear 614 and 624 routers.
Serial numbers are printed on the small white area of the outer box with a set of bar codes.

See :-

http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/10755/NETGEAR-WGR614-Series-Serial-Numbers-Version-Cross-Reference/

If we felt very enthusiastic perhaps a couple of dozen contributors might like to list their Netgear model numbers and serial numbers so we could try to deduce similar rules ?

Kind regards,
Walter

Interesting suggestion walter..   I dont have a DG834G here atm to check, but if anyone else does it would be interesting to see if there is a pattern.

Well I just looked at the box for my DG834Gv3 and on one edge there is a description headed "pacakge contents" that says quite clearly (in white on black) DG834Gv3 router (among other things). It's not huge, but it is there.  ;)

According to the Netgear site

Versions are identified by reading the box or the bottom label.

Interesting.... I've got a DG834Gv2 and it on the box it simply states 'DG834G' in the package contents section and DG834GUK on the white barcode label.  I suppose going from the v1 to the v2 it's fairly easy to distinguish between the models because of the different case design/colour so the picture on the box will act as the guide, but with later models it's not so obvious.  Does anyone have a v4 box?

FWIW, the box of my DG834v3 states on the bottom panel, under "Package Contents":
