BT Voyager 220v Router.
« on: April 25, 2009, 11:17:01 AM »

Hi all,

My question is this,

When I access my router stats,it has all the BT logo's and info on them.If I change isp will I still be able to use this router as it is has all the BT info embedded in it.
Is it a case of re setting something?or do I need a new router.

I think this may answer the question. Apparently the firmware is locked, but you can unlock it.

I have used this site very successfully: http://www.sohodata.co.uk/210unloc.htm

I did it with a 210 which I used (for testing) on Be ADSL2+, but the site also has 220V firmware.

Thanks guys,I thought it wouldn't be simple(for me anyhow).  :)

Will wait nearer the time I can move isp's to see what is on offer.

My shortlist is Newnet.....I think their supplied routers are Cisco.

                      Zen..........Are their supplied ones Thompson?

and               Plusnet.......Not sure.....

If you select a  router from another isp are they pre configured so you just connect them up and enter your ne user details then away you go.

There's little or no point in buying the router from the ISP, unless it's an unavoidable part of the contract and is included 'free'. It's so easy to set up a router that nobody need fear that it might be too hard. In most cases, all you will need to do is enter your ISP login name and password, and the rest is filled in automatically. In your case, being on a very long line, it would be well to choose the router with great care.

The DG834Gv3 or v4 but NOT v5 would be my choice (or the plain DG834v3/v4 if you don't want wireless). There are other good choices though.

Hi UncleUB,

If you have a good crystall ball and can tell if you are likely to have a noisy line the Broadcom chip is a good choice so either the DG834V4 ot the Thompson 585V7 handle that situation well as we had observed on the long line problem I was dealing with and which produced a bRAS of 500 kbps when there were no noise storms. If there is little noise then the AR7 chipset is likely to be better so a 2wire modem seems to do remarkably well. After we had eleiminated the noise source the 2wire produced a bRAS of 750 kbps on the line it reported as having an attenuation of over 80 dB @ 300 kHz, but beforehand it was poorer than the 585V7. The earlier DG834s would probably perform well in this situation.

As I'm helping a number of people with poor performance and usually via Zen connections, I have followed their advice. I've invested in several modems to experiment with but that is probably more than most individuals would want to do.

Kind regards,
Walter

The problem is, of course... it's difficult to buy a specific version of the Netgear DG834 from a retailer. Depends on stock etc. as to which version you'd end up with.

I never new that Mr Chris, so it doesn't tell you on the box whether its v3,v4,v5 or whatever.

I'm not sure if it says on the box, but you can find the right version here (for example):

Unfortunately, through all the models, there has never been any explicit indication on the box as to which model you will be getting.  I think that the Broadcom v4 is probably now being phased out and replaced with the Connexant v5 so if you want a v4 grab it while it's available.

With the v5 it may be possbile to determine the model via details printed on the box; the v5 has a 'Push 'n' Connect' button, a dedicated power switch and also introduces QoS functionality, however I've not seen its box yet so I can't really comment.

There's a label on the underneath of the router which tells you the version.

Yup there certainly is, but I once tried to find out from an online retailer which version they were selling and they refused to break the cellophane seal so couldn't tell me for sure.
